A large sign on Tobago’s main highway announces the Canoe Bay Hotel & Beach Resort. Visitors adventurous enough to drive down more than a mile of unmade track may be disappointed. The property is neither a hotel nor a true resort. It consists of nothing but an unattractive block of 14 budget-grade one-bedroom studio apartments, an older block of 3 2-bedroom apartments, plus a beach cafe-bar with limited snack menu at higher prices than dictated by the quality. In our experience, friendly service is not an option.

The Canoe Bay Resort’s strongest feature is the shallow waters of the bay, surrounded by a small but pleasant beach. The swimming is ideal for families with small children. The beach is open to the public. Visitors who make the mistake of wandering around the property before first paying the admission charge are likely to experience the allegedly high-handed and arrogant manner of the eccentric owner and/or staff. The beach cafe-bar is regularly used to host children’s parties and other similar facilities. Based on our personal experiences, visitors who attempt to use the facilities during such functions are likely to be sent packing with excessive rudeness.

It should be noted that Canoe Bay is located immediately adjacent to Tobago’s first industrial estate. Currently under construction, it is yet to be determined how much this will impact on the previous peace and quiet of the property.

Canoe Bay Beach Resort is a recent development of a handful of two double bedroom "Villa Apartments" and 14 one bedroom apartments, situated in a private 44 acre estate right on idyllic Canoe Bay Beach.

The private resort area offers security and peace, with few others sharing the beach on most days. Stroll or picnic amongst the lawns, thatched gazebos and picnic tables. Enjoy the swimming pool with deck and loungers, newly completed in 2006.

The beach itself is wide and the sea shallow and calm, ideal for children, with some good snorkelling to be enjoyed.

There is a beach bar/restaurant, with freshwater showers, toilets and changing facilities - although the apartments are situated on the beach if you want to pop back instead. The restaurant offers breakfasts and light lunches only

All apartments are fully self-contained with air conditioned rooms with private bathrooms, television and patio fully equipped. The two bedroomed apartments are referred to as "apartment villas" as there are just three next to each other and they really do feel like stand alone villas once relaxing inside. These have full kitchens. The one bedroom apartments have local TV and kitchenette facilities.

Canoe Bay is conveniently situated just 15 minutes drive from Crown Point Airport, Store Bay and Pigeon Point, or from Scarborough Town in the other direction. Although the beach lies on the windward, Atlantic side of the island adjacent to the Hilton Hotel & Tobago Plantations Resorts, the sea is calm here, an offshore reef providing shelter for a natural lagoon, where swimming is safe for all.
