Castara Retreats consists of a newly-built wooden Caribbean house split into three apartments - the two-bedroom Rainforest with Pelican, a studio apartment, and Osprey, a one-bedroom apartment below.

The property also now offers three self-contained lodges: the popular renovated Fisherman's Lodge and two new Haiku lodges. The apartments and lodges can be rented separately or combined for larger families or groups.

The property is set in lush grounds on the hillside above beautiful Castara bay and has very rapidly achieved a truly excellent reputation.

We started our 2005 visit to Tobago with 5 days at Castara Retreats. We now fully understand why the property attracts such regular and highly positive comment in our forum. This accommodation offers a truly unique experience.

Castara Retreats is superbly located overlooking the bay of Castara on Tobago with stunning views of the Caribbean and mountains. Set right above the beach, backed by the deep green of the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere and framed by mango trees and bamboo, it offers Tobago accommodation that allows you to live in the landscape.

The accommodation consists of three apartments that can be rented for holidays separately or combined for larger groups plus a Fisherman's Lodge and two new hardwood lodges. The apartments and lodges are specially designed to create open, spacious living areas that allow unhindered views, cool sea breezes and the natural sights and sounds that surround the property. The apartments's new timber structure is in classic Haiku style and is designed to allow man and nature to live in mutual respect .

Outside is an acre of gardens with sun terraces, barbecues and shady spots where you can relax under the mango trees and listen to the mot-mots calling. Purpose-designed deck areas are as perfect for birders as they are for watching the manta rays in the bay below or the spectacular Caribbean sunsets. The basic principle is looking after yourselves in well-resourced self-catering accommodation with good local back up and support free from the constraints and protocols of hotels.

If you are looking for informal, relaxing Tobago accommodation then Castara Retreats is the holiday rental for you. The house, with its newly completed timber structure, is in classic Haiku style and is designed to allow man and nature to live in mutual respect. The house sits gently on the land, is reliant on natural air flows for cooling, and reflects grace, simplicity and restraint. Each apartment and the lodges have open spacious living areas and comfortable seating for both dining and relaxing. The apartment dividing walls and floors are well soundproofed to ensure privacy and tranquillity. Mango trees fringe the property with banana palms and bamboo below. The fruits are there to enjoy when in season.

Last year, a wooden pagoda was created from rainforest timber among the trees below Fisherman's Lodge, that offers wonderful views to the West. All our guests are invited to share its use. We would point out to readers that our apartments are located on a hillside overlooking the beach. Access involves a 75 yard walk up a winding pathway. Consequently our accommodations may not be suitable for those with walking difficulties or who easily get out of breath.
