We read the mixed reviews of this hotel on the website after booking and therefore it was with some trepidation that we arrived at the Hotel particularly as we were taking my rather fussy parents to renew their vows.
We need not have worried unlike some reports we found the hotel clean and very friendly.
This is not a 5 star top quality hotel, but then again we did not pay for that, we considered we paid for a hotel with good basic amenities and services and that´s what we got.
The food was excellent, a superb mix of local dishes and English food meaning that you could try the Goat Curry or plump for something more traditional, in our ten days there we did not consider the wide choices of food at each meal time to be repetitive. The restaurant staff were attentive and friendly, although a little to keen to clear away the plates.
We tried the A La Carte menu on the special day and that was first rate the food was superb.
As a tea drinker you did have to keep asking for additional tea bags at breakfast as they cater more for coffee drinkers, but that´s the same in most places abroad.
The all inclusive package was a bonus as the price list at the bar was more expensive than I would have imagined.
The room was of a good size and clean with basic amenities of a large double bed desk/dressing table and sofa, the view from the balcony over the bay is a delight, the bathroom is basic with a shower bath. The room had a safe and air conditioning which had seen better days but were being replaced during our stay.
We went for the Fridge in our room and found it stocked with beer, water, coke and lemonade every day, no matter how much we drunk.
The room we were in was an incredibly long walk from the bar/reception, but that is probably the price you pay for every room with a sea view. Those who like falling out of their room on to the beach need to consider they may have a trek to the bar, unless they have a fridge in their room.
However the pool around the bar is the Hotel´s greatest asset, a large excellent pool. Swim, drink, eat in the restaurant, lounge on the beds or go in the sea all within the same area.
Entertainment was provided every night and the beech traders/locals were friendly and full of fun, they would instantly leave you alone if asked but ´helped´ with the entertainment at night. They were passionate about protecting the Turtles and although out of season when we went would search the beeches during the day to ensure that any which hatched were given cool wet accommodation before being released into the sea at night.
Our sink blocked during our stay and this was repaired within hours of being reported but the telephone was never repaired despite asking a number of times. (it did mean that we didn´t pay for the call we had to make from reception)
The water sports section is well stocked with windsurfers and kayaks but the Aquafin is showing it´s age, they do have a Hobbie Cat which cost circa £35 to rent.
Everything the staff could do to make the wedding ceremony a memorable occasion was done including planting flowers around the bases of trees in the chosen location.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is not looking for a 5 star hotel, particularly those with children.

Rex Turtle Beach 10 Sep 2008
JackieP from Kent visited in August 2008 and awarded
We visited the rex as a family of 6 from the 7th to 21st August. Was kind of worried by some of the negative views around, but decided to keep an open mind, I was not disappointed. No it's not 5 star but neither did I expect it to be. Yes the rooms, well most of them do need to be upgraded, but they were cleaned everyday, the beds were fine, the air conditioning worked, which were the main things. The rooms though are right on the beach, perfect.
The pool area and the beach are wonderful, and the beach is nearly always empty. Great to see the fisherman with their catch. The kids loved watching this. Also great to see two of the local guys, some of you may call them vendors, protecting the turtles caught in the net by the fisherman. Both Daryl & smithy chasing a guy trying to steal a turtle caught in the net.
We found everyone to be really friendly, all the other guests ,with whom we made friends, & am still in contact with a couple & many of the hotel staff.
We were fortunate enough to see a large leatherback turtle laying her eggs, thanks to Dexter waking us at 3.30am one morning, by banging on our patio doors. We also saw around 150 hatchlings. Amazing.
Many thank to the SOS turtles guys for this, especially Daryl, Grant & Akel.
Did several of the trips around the island. Use Peter Cox or Kelton for the bird watching/Rainforest tour, they are both brilliant. For the fun tours with the kids on the boats to nylon pool/ Buccoo Reef we used Daryl from Top Notch tours, who we got to know well on the holiday. Hes great fun, will take great care of you & the kids love him.A seriously nice & genuine guy. Look out for him on the beach. Woody is also a friendly guy & his tours are good too.
Would definately return, loved everything about Tobago. Next time will try to see the rest of the island & try some of the local restaurants.
Must search for that really long lead for my husband to tie me to, just got on with too many people.

Our fifth visit! last one five years ago.
Although Turtle Beach could do with some refurbishment it still has a special vibe for the whole family from 3 year old grandson through teens and thirties to granddad. The rooms are clean, a good size and comfortably furnished.
Some aspects have improved – the water supply; the greater variety of fresh fruit, salad and veg to complement the wonderful fish; the turtle-watch on the beach; the variety of water sports on offer.
The staff were very responsive to requests and any issue were sorted out to our satisfation. Very good value for money and a great ambience for young and old alike.
We missed the cafe serving readily available snacks and one request, bring back the Ole Time Jammers!

We enjoyed our stay at Turtle Beach, staff were fantastic and very pleasant. Rooms were very clean and newly renovated.
The Locals that are also around at the hotel were most helpful and entertaining which added some extra activities in our stay. We ended up going back to the hotel for another stay while visiting TnT...I'll be going back to Turtle Beach...well worth the money for a great hotel, fantastic food.

We have just returned today 06/07/2008 from a wonderful two weeks at Turtle Beach Hotel, the accommodation may not be grand but it is clean and spacious although in need of re-decoration which the hotel is currently doing, the staff are extremely friendly, polite and helpful, unfortunately we only stayed on a bed and breakfast basis (breakfast was excellent every morning with a good selection)but would certainly recommend all inclusive because there are no other bars or restaurants really within walking distance ( I would certainly return on an A/I basis as the food we sampled at the Hotel was certainly nice and also varied) the locals on the beach were no problem in fact they did everything they could to make us feel welcome durng our stay even arranging BBQ,s on the beach at night which were excellent (Woody you are a great Cook)also we saw at least a dozen Turtles on the beach during our stay which was incredible, I am glad that they take such good care of the poor creatures.Special thanks to Woodys Tours and Frankies Tours also Smithy for looking after us , ladies if you like your massage just go and see Mary on the beach she does a great job, also does wonders braiding hair and last but not least special thanks to "Famous" and "Criminal" for two fantastic boat trips, snorkeling and BBQ's on beach and even finding the dolphins for us, by the way Famous if you get to read this WHERE IS THE CD YOU PROMISED ME (will sort you out when we come back)
thanks to everybody
