Porridge Place- Review 06 Feb 2008
ClareW from London visited in January 2008 and awarded
We stayed here for 8 days in January 2008, and wish we could've stayed a lot longer, but unfortunately Porridges was booked up when we asked to extend our stay.
The apartment had everything that we needed, and was very comfortable and clean. Porridge and Jeanell were very helpful and kind whenever we asked for anything, and nothing seemed like too much trouble. It is the ideal place to stay and relax and feed the birds on the balcony each morning.
We stayed in other areas of the island, but no where compared to Castara or Porridges place.... we recommend it highly!

Guest Report - Porridge's Place
Anders Brink from Sweden visited in December 2007 and awarded
This was my first accommodation on my first trip to Tobago and it was excellent! Jeanell cooked really nice dinners the nights I didn't eat out, everything was clean, the air conditioning worked perfectly and mr Porridge was fun and well known in the village. Toilet and shower worked without any problems and new sheets and towels was provided regularly and at requests.
The only downside is that you have to walk up the hill to get to the apartment, it takes about 10-15 minutes uphill. Jeanell also arranged for private taxi around the island and mr. Porridge can arrange for anything between a sightseeing tour in the jungle and donkey rides.
I can definitely recommend this place!

Great Hospitality And Great Value
Matt Wilson from Trinidad visited in December 2007 and awarded
We love Porridge´s Place... Porridge and Jeanell really made us feel welcome and included us in all the local goings-on over the New Year. This made us feel part of the Castara community – this is something so special when you are visiting a place, but so difficult to achieve. We will definitely be back soon – we felt .
The accommodation itself is simple but cosy and romantic – it suits us perfectly. And it really is excellent value – if you´re looking for somewhere comfortable to stay but can live without the sea views and upmarket trappings, then look no further. Here you´ll find true Tobago warmth.
Castara itself is a friendly fishing village set in a beautiful bay on the north coast. There are several other accommodations in the village, but it doesn´t feel like a tourist town (unlike the Crown Point area) – rather it feels very local. It takes a day or two but once you begin to get to know the people (and them you), you really feel at home – Porridge and Jeanell accelerate this process greatly.
The north coast is magnificent. The North Coast Road twists and turns, rises and falls all the way to Castara and beyond to Parlatuvier, and now on to Charlotteville. This is part of the appeal – it gives a sense of isolation and the steep forest covered slopes prevent any sprawl. But it´s also not for the feint-hearted driver – the roads are quite narrow and you have to dodge potholes, landslides, subsidence, other drivers... We enjoyed it! Once you get to know the road itīs straightforward – the journey to the main east-west highway north of Scarborough is about 30 minutes (a bit more when you first arrive... Tobagans probably do it in about 20).
All in all, Castara and Porridge´s Place are highly recommended.

Peaceful, Relaxing And Just What We Needed!
Sarah And James from U.K. visited in December 2007 and awarded
I've just read the other reviews of Porridge's place here and they pretty much describe the apartment, it's location and facilities. One thing that seems to have been missed however is the amount of wildlife that is present throughout the day and night, and I'm not just referring to bugs! Jeanell has a bird feeder set up next to the covered patio, which attracts lots of bananaquits as well as blue-grey tanajars.
The apartment is simple, but contains everything you need. The thing that we loved most about it was the seclusion. We were perfectly placed to join or ignore the outside world as we wanted, which was perfect for a relaxed week away.
I would recommend this place to anyone wanting somewhere quiet to stay.
