Top River Pearl - Reader Reports & Opinion
Guest Report - Top River Pearl
Steve Bond from U.K. visited in February 2007 and awarded
We stayed at the Top River Pearl for 10 days and can easily recommend it. It is 5 minutes from the sea front up a hill from the jetty. The rooms were airy and clean with a balcony. The rooms were cleaned every day. The coffee & milkshakes on hand in the cafe were a bonus. Also the owner was very helpful with local info and sorting out lifts and transport etc. We wanted to stop in a quiet place like Charlotteville and it was just what we wanted – we were treated like locals and loved it. We also thought there were plenty of places to eat unlike one other reviewer. I would agree that the chickens were noisy 24 hours a day, but had no problem with local hifi. As per another reviewer, the bats were a bonus.

Friendly Place To Stay, Far Away From Mass Tourism

Top River Pearl, a guest-house owned by the German (to be more precise: Bavarian)landscaper Rainer Tichai was reviewed and rated several times on this site and only can support the many positive comments impressions!
We – my son Paul and I spent 2 weeks in this marvously situated guesthouse with a great few across Charlottville and Man O'War Bay. We were lucky to meet Rainer who usually visits Tobago twice a year and it was fascinating to listen to him. I think, now we have a much better impression about the live in Charlotteville and it's people. Rainer also told a lot about his future ideas concernig his guest house and to make it even more what it already is: a real pearl in the Caribbean sea.
The guesthouse is highly recommendable for individual travellers who look for the Caribbean experience far away from the 5 star resorts you find in other places.
The good sized appartments have a little cooking facility with a fridge and a gas stove, and all necessary items for cooking as self-supporters. A little store were you can find most of stocks is only a five-minute walk away.
We usually prefered to have breakfest and lunch in the small café, Rainers coffee is quite famous anyway, but one also should try his pizza and spaghetti with sauce "alla Rainer".

A Very Very Relaxed Place
Aleks Strazar from Slovenia visited in January 2007 and awarded
Me and my wife have just returned from 2 weeks holidays in Tobago. We have started in Charloteville. The town is small and very non-touristic, in the positive sense. We have enjoyed immensely the quiet and peace of tranquil surroundings. There is really not much to be done there but to relax and have your European pace catch up with locals.
We have stayed at Top River Pearl, also due to reports we have found on this site. Mr. Rainer, the owner, was up to our expectations. He has replied to each of our numerous emails. His appartements are spacious (we have stayed at ground appartement for 2 persons), adequatelly equipped also for self-catering. There are only fan however the temperature in the evening was OK. Only annoyance were mosquitos although not in a quantities we have encountered in other part of the world we have travelled. A mosquito net on the windows would improve the situation. The balcony was a big plus, with nice views over the village and the bay. You can have breakfast in adjoining Cappucino Bar in the morning or milk shake in the afternoon. The appartement was clean and up to the European standards so we are confident to reccomend it to everzone who is seeking a really tranquil place to start his Carribean vacations.
As the village is small, everything is in walking distance. There are several small shops, local eateries have fresh food (fish and chicken) and reasonable prices. Pirate Bay is where you should go to the beach for swimming and sunbathing.

Two Weeks Holiday Report

We stayed 12 nights in the Top River Pearl, just 3min by foot up hill in Charlotteville.
Excellent apartment (bedroom with cooking facility and shower/toilette) including a private balcony. One apartment costs 50-60 US$ per night. We enjoyed the kind service (managed by Lisa; cheers hereby again to Lisa & the Top-River-Pearl staff!).
Top River Pearl has also a Cappuccino Bar, where Italian coffee is served (yeah, made with the typical Italian aluminum steam “volcano” machines!). Also available is freshly prepared fruit juice and breakfast/light lunch (however, the Cappu Bar is not opened on Sundays).
For us as Europeans, it was also spectacular to see fruit bats hanging at the roof of Top River Pearl. We observed the flight behavior of the bats during sunset (they show a perfect ultra-wave echo orientation!). They are not (NOT) aggressive, hence, one mustn´t be afraid of them: we did several digital-photos of them while hanging above us!

Great View, Spacious Apartment
Mark Neil from U.K. visited in August 2006 and awarded
Hi,
We just got back from a 2 week stay at TRP (August 2006). We stayed in the large 2 bedroom 'cottage' which is incredibly spacious and has the best view from the bacony of any of the apartments. The apartment is designed to make the most of the breeze so contrary to our expectations we did not need the air conditioning. The owner Rainer was there during our stay, and was extremely helpful, even changing some money for us when he went to Scarborough one day. He has done an incredible job getting the place built in this sleepy villiage – Charloteville is a place where it can be hard enough even to organise lunch!
The living accommodation is huge, with a large kitchen and dining table/lounge area. There is also a table on the shared deck just outside the door of the apartment which is a lovely place to enjoy Jane's Rotis!
Without any doubt at all Rainer serves the best coffee on the island, and it's better than most expressos I've had in the UK too. He also does pasta (very good) and sandwiches/burgers/chips for lunch which make a welcome change to the limited menu in the village restaurants, and he organised a pizza (tobago style and excellent) for us for dinner one evening.
Highly recommended – will definitely stay there if we return to Tobago.
Mark Neil
