Toucann Inn   03 Sep 2004

Nerissa from Canada

Hi All,

I just returned from a 10 day vacation in Trinidad with 2 of those days spent in Tobago. I didn't have the pleasure of staying at Toucann Inn because of there were no available rooms. However I did have the pleasure of dining at the restaurant on one of those nights. I was suprised at how beautiful the grounds were. I was truly sorry that I couldn't stay there because it was very well kept. The restaurant was very good as well and the food was delicious. It was money well spent. My next stay in Tobago will have to be Toucann Inn for sure!

Toucan Is So So   19 Jul 2004

D Martin from NY,USA

First off, I'm a Trini expatriate based in the US. We stayed at the Toucan Inn in July for a few nights. We had a quiet garden room, which was clean and had a beautiful decor (dark wood furniture and similarly framed french doors and walls, opened up to a beutiful garden. The red clay tile floor was a nice touch also). But the amenities were poor; Tobago is very beautiful and so is my spouse, but together they weren't enough to make up for the lack of cabletv in the rooms :( Also the shower and sink, were pathetic (water conservation?) the single nightstand was across the room from the bed, the switches for the wall mounted bed side lamps were not reacheable from the bed, and the bed itself was uncomftable, and we got 2 twins, though we asked for a full. Given most guests we saw at the hotel were couples, I find this inexplicable. We never used the pool though it was a nice back drop to the restaurant, the food at which was fair; the roasted foul was excellent, but the bacon rapped chicken wasn't as good, breakfast was a dissapointment; why isn't fresh squeezed orange juice without ice possible on a caribbean island where the fruit is grown :( The staff were polite enough but we were slighted (ignored) by the manager at the "meet & greet" This slight was made all the more evident when, at a later night, we had dinner at the Kariwak Village restaurant, and the owner came over to our table to thank us for dining there and invited us to tour the grounds . If you plan to be out most of the day and night, and simply need a clean place to rest your head for a few hours, and an ok dinner, then Toucan is your place. Toward that end, a car is a must, don't delude yourself , 5 mins walk to the beach? I don't think so. Plus you can beach hop and sight see at your leisure, Just stay on or near the coast roads or you might get lost as we did, Higlight of our trip though. My $.02 FWIW. Have fun.

2 Weeks At The Toucan Inn In May/june 2004 - Review   09 Jun 2004

Florian Baldauf from Eschelbronn, Germany

Well then, after months of only "taking" from this extraordinary homepage, it is time to "give" something. So here is a review of 2 weeks at the Toucan Inn:

The Toucan Inn is very close to the airport: 5 minutes to walk, 1 minute to drive. This didn´t affect our holiday, though. There are only 5 or 6 big aircraft per week (quite a few smaller ones), none at nighttime, and they can hardly be heard. So, although the Inn is in the heart of Crown Point: really quiet – and nice settling in well-kept tropical gardens.

The Toucan Inn offers both so-called "pool rooms" and "garden rooms". We had asked for a quiet room in advance and thus were given a garden room. This proved to be a good decision, as the pool rooms are – surprise – directly next to the pool which might disturb you in the evening as the restaurant is only some steps away, including eveningly entertainment some nights (which never took longer than until 10 pm). The pool rooms are even smaller than the garden rooms, and there were some couples who asked for a garden room after having been put into a pool room.

Back to the garden room: well-sized, very clean, effective aircon (if a little loud), all in all maybe a little spartanic (which didn´t affect us at all; still feeling very well :D

The only thing a little annoying was that if our neighbours next door were using their shower, the waterpipeline (correct term?) produced a sound like 50 people wiping out their birthday cake candles: ppphhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

As I said: the ONLY annoying thing!

Room service was discrete and effective.

Staff: Very friendly and helpful. The ladies at the reception: For example, when my wife was feeling sick for some days, they were extremely helpful and caring – we felt in very good hands (thanx again!).

The staff at the restaurant were friendly and quick – well, two exceptions: Two ladies seemed to suffer constant bad mood and we were often treated with what appeared to be indifference. They were not rude though, and maybe they had some trouble at home – they were just different from the rest of the gang (big hello to the "bachelor").

Food: Yum! We ate out at many occasions, but still found ourselves at Bonkers at 4 or 5 nights. Every single meal was excellent, be it lamb, fish, chicken – whatever. Kiss the cook!

Still, the prices are moderate: prices for dinner range from about 60 TT $ until 100 TT $ (8 – 13 €) – not more than at home.

Drinks were cheap, even the cocktails (20 – 30 TT $) – which was good because they are delicious (Pineapple Daiquiri!!!)

Breakfast was tasty as well, although a little repeating (but then, my breakfast at home is nearly the same every day.) You can choose out of some options (no buffet) like fruit plate, pancake with sirup, fully cooked (ham and eggs, beans) – it was always a good start for a hot day!

Did I forget something? Maybe the resumé: What a nice little place with friendly people (both staff and guests), clean rooms and great food. We had a good time and can definitely recommend the Toucan Inn / Bonkers!

:D :D :D 8)

Honeymoon May 2004 @ Toucan Inn   22 May 2004

Joe King from Fife, Scotland - But Always An Irishman!!

Well we are back after our first trip to Tobago. While in Tobago we stayed at the Toucan Inn. I have given the establishment a rating of Magnificent in the satisfaction poll and if their had been a higher rating I would probably have used it!!

The hotel is a gem, from the moment we checked in and met Christine on the desk, to the moment we were leaving and saying our goodbye's to Avelon and Shelly in the bar we were always made to feel at home in Toucan inn.

The accomodation is Basic, but the bed is very comfy, the air conditioning is very effective (if a bit loud) and the shower is wonderfully powerfull and always warm. Because we were on honeymoon the main aim of our holiday was relaxation and that is what we did around the wonderfull pool 13 out of 14 days. There were days when we had the pool to ourselves and there were days when we had to share with some other extremely friendly couples etc but all in all it was exceptional.

The Breakfasts were devine, either pancakes, full fry, fruit platter or the daily special. Lunch is a must if you are in the area and peckish. From the sandwiches up to the fish and chips, and the burger(our favourite) and chips the lunches are fantastic and very reasonably priced. Our first experience of dinner in Bonkers wasn't great, slow service and not the best meal ever. But we gave them a 2nd and 3rd chance based on reviews I had seen here previously and they improved vastly. Our only qualm was that there menu is not very extensive.

All in all the toucan inn is a fantastic spot, perfect for the traveler who just wants a nice relaxing holiday in a nice quite spot. Even its proximity to the airport isn't a factor, as Steve said in a previous post there is only about one large jet landing every day and some days there are none. There is work currently ongoing at the airport but again you hear nothing af this from the Toucan Inn.

Tobago Over Easter   27 Feb 2004

HelenH from Derby England

We will be in Tobago at Castara retreats at Easter. Do the shops /restaurants close up? If so which days?Would it be worth us hiring a car for the Easter weekend so we can get to restaurants in other areas or will they be open in Castara?

Thanks

Helen
