Guest Report

David Martin from Trinidad visited in July 2008 and awarded  Two out of Five

My wife and my two small children (3yr & 6yr)and myself stayed for three days on an all inclusive package. It was overall an enjoyable stay. Some of the staff were warm anf friendly others whilst not rude or abusive may have had personal issues which they brought to the workplace. The children loved the pool and we had to keep them busy until 9.30 am before they could use it. A feature that management should consider would be lights in the pool and earlier opening and a later closing hour. At 6.00 pm the place was still bright and the kids were disappointed to leave it. The room was cozy, the showers were old but functional. The A/c worked well no excessive noise. The TV (kids stations )were horrible could not see anything. The beach front is a reef so no bathing is possible its cozy though for a seaview and relaxation. the meals are not the greatest and fruit variety would be welcome. not much to say about lunch, was never there for it. Dinner was very basic, we expected a bit more variety however all meals were tasty and luke warm, not hot. Food warmers would solve this. Things that could transform this facility to truly a bargin hunters paradise would be an in house one stop shop for things like mosquito repellant, sun tan lotion, floats for kids ect. Also a Tour guide leaflet that the HOTEL recommends, There was a guided tour which i took from the facility which i am not sure was sanctioned by the hotel or not, but it was a total disaster, the front desk knows the individual and one of the other staff members recommended him. This tour was costly and 90% of it was seeing bush. and i had to pay for meals as well as entry to Pigen Point(We spent 45 Minutes there)The tour guide went to carry some one back to their hotel. The Tour did not even take us to Fort George or the unnamed grave, or to any other beach facility or to any waterfall or to the Gulf city mall in lowlands, seven hours of crap. Get this guy off your premises he will do no good for your image. On closing the hotel could do with a Paint job and proper lighting at the entrance. Other simple maintenance which a power washer could fix and a laundry service would be welcome. In spite of the negatives the ambience of the facilty is good and my family and i enjoyed our stay. This letter is sent with the intent that your facilty can truly become a sought after one.

Thank you

Guest Report - Tropikist Beach Hotel

Mr Jeremy Ec Baily from U.K. visited in June 2008 and awarded  Four out of Five

My wife and I stayed in room 88 for two lovely weeks (June 2008) and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The room was painted a dull peach, had a high ceiling and a beautiful sea view from the balcony. The shower and toilet were old but in full working order. There was adequate drawer and hanging space and a Queen size bed, a mini-fridge and a TV that was never switched on, so no idea if it worked or not, we don´t watch TV when on holiday. The air-conditioning unit made all the right noises and its fan pushed air about, it however steadfastly refused to drop the temperature anywhere near the 16C degrees the remote control claimed it would. Clean towels and a maid service daily ensured all was fine.

We stayed all-inclusive and thought it good value for the money we paid. Don´t expect the huge buffets style meals favoured by most all-inclusive packages. We ate well, if sometimes with luke-warm food. Most guests dressed (long trousers, dresses, etc) for the evening meal.

The pool was clean and tidy although some areas could have been cleared up more often. The staff appeared stand-off-ish at first. We got round this by smiling a lot and engaged them in conversation while waiting to be served and were looked after eventually.

A 2 Star, budget hotel is what we paid for and that is what we got, if you want 5 Star service and amenities like some of the guests did, then go elsewhere and pay the difference.

It is a long way from perfect, but a lot better than some reviewers seem to think.

Good Value For Money.

Pam Adamson from U.K. visited in April 2008 and awarded  Three out of Five

I recently stayed 10 days at th Tropikist and I found it good value for money. It's location is central to the airport (although you hardly hear any noise), Store Bay, shops, internet cafes, The Golden Star, Pigeon Point & many restaurants.

Our room was comfortable and clean. Towels were changed every day and you could collect beach towels from the reception. It was very easy to rent a car/jeep or take a conducted tour of the island. The new manager was polite and courteous and seemd to be on duty every day from early to late.

It has a very pleasant pool and jacuzzi, good floral setting, is right on the beach (there are loungers placed there for sunbathers, but due to the pebbles/rocks it was unsuitable for bathing). There were two restaurants and at breakfast you could choose cereals, fresh fruit, pancakes, toast/jams, or a traditional fry up. Omelettes were made in front of you from a choice of 4.

The lunchtime menu got a bit boring as it never changed – burgers, club sandwiches or salad, but the same applies to more expenses all inclusives – I went on a cruise last year & we got bored with the food there after a while. The evening meal was fine, soup, salad, chicken, lamb, beef, pork, a mixture of different vegetables, rice or potatoes. Most nights it was buffet style but very slow on the nights when it was a la carte due to the slow service of the staff.

The things that could have improved would be more evening entertainment – it all closed down at 9.30/10pm. There were singers, steel pans & music played whilst you ate (from 7pm to 9pm) – after that nothing. Maybe they should re-open the disco, have a quiz night, karaoke, etc.

The attitude of the staff was in the most OK but some of them definately need a course in customer care! It also needs something to do for children – they have extensive grounds to the side of the hotel where facilities could be installed.

I would go back there again & the report about the hotel does need upgrading.

An Enjoyable Value For Money Stay

Eric Eynon from U.K. visited in March 2008 and awarded  Four out of Five

I feel strongly that your summary of the Tropikist should be modified to accurately reflect the hotel and staff.

Having spent two weeks there it is most definitely a credit to Tabago and your description should therefore be adjusted to project a more balanced opinion, for example look at the reports you already have, the majority I have read give a good impression. I am only relieved that I read your report after I had booked otherwise I may have missed out on a very enjoyable experience.

The hotel has a new manager and both he and his staff are visable, approachful and helpful, a view shared by just about everyone I met during my stay.

Yes anyone can pick holes in anything, I do it for a living, but let's be realistic. People complaining about the birds at breakfast, ok you have to guard your toast but your in paradise, on an open terrace a few feet from the Caribbean, birds live there!

Some areas are tired but during my stay I witnessed a programme of re-decoration and some re-wiring but all said and done it's not that bad.

The bar though does close early, personally I'd stay till the early hours. On several occasions when we did get back between 10 and 10.30 staff were there but no customers, I guess it's supply and demand and there was little demand.

Far more positives than negatives, you really should change your summary for this hotel.

We stayed here for 7 nights during the carnival season. It is very close to the airport but is not too noisy. We stayed in the deluxe room but the safe had been removed which was one of the reasons we choose this. The bed was king size and quite comfortable, and the room was large and we had a ocean view. The bathrooms are basic and could do with updating, although the standard rooms are very basic and small. There was only 1 pool open and the games room is closed. There were chairs around the pool but as it was a busy period there was not enough unless you got there early, the same goes for the parasols. The hotel provides pool towels. Our rate included buffet breakfast and this was adequate with a choice of hot and cold foods. We found the staff were helpful and friendly and the rooms were always cleaned by early afternoon. The beach is sadly neglected and we didnt use it but i dont think it would have been good to swim in as the floor was very rocky, but there are nice beaches nearby.

There is a restaurant for lunch and dinner and we ate their once and had a buffet which was value for money but it is within walking distance of lots of other restaurants.

The hotel does get a lot of negative comments but in my opinion it is a good value for money hotel and if you just want a good base then you should consider it.
