Hello all, First of all, I'd just like to thank this site's owners for a great, informative site, it has certainly answered a lot of the basic questions I had regarding currency etc. My wife and I will be coming from the UK for a week at the Hilton in a little over a fortnight. Now, when I travel, I like to try the local food. I'll eat just about anything ! My wife however is a little more fussy, and prefers plainer food. Can anyone recommend any restaurants which can provide both ? Also, I've read much about the Hilton and one thing that worries me is the reported poor location. we'll be planning to spend our week taking it easy, going for walks along the beach etc. I've figured from reading this site that the beach is not the best, but the pools at the Hilton make up for this. Can anyone who knows reassure me ? I do like swimming/snorkelling in the ocean and consider myself to be a strong swimmer, is the ocean at the Hilton really unsuitable ? thanks

Hi Steve,
Well as promised here goes. We had a great time and did so much. Thank you for the site; it helped make our trip magical. We travelled in Premium class with Monarch and were pleasantly surprised at how easy it was both going and coming home – we did not have any queues even though we only checked in around 2 hours before the flight, and the crew on both flights were lovely.
We stayed at The Hilton, the hotel is on the Atlantic side but we loved the breeze and the warm sea – we did not find the wind too much nor the sea too rough. The Hotel was fantastic and the room absolutely gorgeous, though to be fair we did have a sea view jacuzzi suite. Apparently all the rooms are very similar and all have views of the sea with lush bathrooms.
The hotel is a short car ride from the main town and Crown Point and lots of restaurants, if you have no car you do need to take a taxi which can be really expensive for a return journey approx £12.00. We took a guided tour around the Island as this was our first time to Tobago; this was a fab day out and showed us lots of places that we wanted to revisit later on in the week once we had hired a car. We used Ali Barba from Ali Barba tours – it was fun and well worth the money. We hired a car and travelled around most of the island – what a wonderful, beautiful place with great people, we ate on the beach at Store Bay, ate rotis at Charlotteville, chicken BBQ at Englishmans Bay and fish at Pigeon Point all very cheap and very tasty. We ate out of the hotel most nights, though the food at the Hilton was very nice and the afternoon tea – very special.
We tried lots of different places, we loved Kariwak, Seahorse Inn, Indigo, and of course the truly romantic Tamaras at Coco reef. Pelican reef and Dillons were also worth a visit. We found Shirvan Watermill – nice but very expensive.
We had only one bad food experience and that was at The Golden Star – bad food, bad service, bad attitude to customers, we spent the whole evening there eating and drinking and attending the talent scouting event they were hosting, at the end of the night they refused to call us a taxi even though we offered to pay for the call!!
All in all we had the most memorable holiday ever. We did visit Coco reef and yes it was lovely – though we did prefer the Hilton location. If anyone would like more info, I'd be happy to provide it.
Steve, many people mentioned your website and the owner of Indigo said he'd like to buy you and Jill dinner!!
Best regards Nicola

What a wonderful website! I've been clicking through it for over an hour now. Maybe you can offer some suggestions for the perfect two week vacation.
My wife & I (in our 30's) with no kids plan on spending two weeks in October 2002 in Tobago. We have six nights for free at the Hilton (hurray for frequent traveler points). Now for our lovely dilemma: where to stay for the next 8 nights! I wish all my problems were this way! We love to scuba dive (both certified), I love to golf. When not doing either of those activities, I'm usually face down in the water with snorkel attached swimming with the fish. Wife likes to "spa". Air conditioning is a must. Clean, spaceous location prefered. Nice pool a plus but not required. Prefer something with a max price of $100 US per night if possible. As far as location, we prefer to be on/very close to the beach, but if the deal is worthy, we'll walk a bit. Also, since we'll have plenty of time at the Hilton & that area, would it be best to try another point of the island? Further north? Or is most action in the southwest area? Can we simply rent a car & drive to the north areas for the day safely and easily?
Thanks in advance for your ideas,
Sebastian in Chicago

I just found this site and checked out the review for the Hilton Tobago, where my husband and I stayed for 10 nights last winter during our fourth trip to Tobago.
I know that people's preferences for hotels differ. I, for example, do not like the narrow, shadeless, manmade beach at the Coco Reef, nor its setting in "busy" Crown Point. However, the reviewer incorrectly stated that the Hilton has no beach — au contraire, it is on one of the longest beaches in Tobago -- more than a mile long, at least. The beach directly in front of the hotel is eroding. But take a left turn at the pool and there's a long sandy beach lined with palms that's perfect for walking. (It's the same beach used by the Ocean Point condos about half-mile away.) The surf definitely is not "pounding" on this beach. I went in the water every day. The water is sorta choppy but it's waist-high for a looooooong way out. We definitely enjoyed the strong ocean breezes -- very cooling. If I understand what the reviewer wrote correctly, he/she just looked around the resort and did not stay there. The staff is friendly and helpful. Occupancy has been low, partly because all of Tobago is undegoing a tourist slump, due largely to airlines pulling Tobago off their routes.
I had a good time at the Hilton and got a very good rate. I'll probably return to more "Tobago-style" accommodations next time, but anyone considering this new resort should have correct information about the beach. I tried to post this in the hotel review section, but couldn't figure out how to do it.
