Sweet Nest - Reader Reports & Opinion

Guest Report - Hibiscus Heights

Lisa & Jessica from Canada visited in May 2008 and awarded  Five out of Five

Hibiscus Heights is fantasic. Paul and Gillian are the best hosts and made us feel very welcome! The Artist Studio is clean, larger than it appears in the photographs, and had everything we needed (and more!).

We also had the opportunity to check out the villa which is BEAUTIFUL! Very spacious and has a wonderful private pool!

Hibiscus is close to everything you need! The restaurants down the hill (1 minute walk) are excellent and very reasonably priced (even for students!). There are two beaches very close by: Grafton, a five minute walk, and Mt Irving, a 10 minute walk). There is also a convenience store, fruit stand, pizza place and music shop down the hill (all were excellent). Signatures bar is also just down the hill and is very nice by anyone's standards (Try the flaming SOCA Warrior shot!!).

Try to make friend with a local who works for SOS for a chance to see leatherback sea turtles nesting on the beach. Stop by Frankie's tours and take the 1/2 day glass boat tour of Buccoo reef (only $15!) and the full day coastal tour (our favourite!). Set aside a day to check out Pigeon Point beach. The museum and the view from the Fort in Scarborough is worth the trip. Check out the Shade on ladies night. Walk down to the Grafton Bird Sanctuary for the feeding.

There are so many things to do and something for everyone but those few were our favourites of what we tried...

This trip was more amazing than anything we expected. We can't imagine staying with anyone but Paul and Gill and we recommend Hibiscus Heights to family, friends and ANYONE travelling to Tobago. We plan on returning to Tobago and when we do we will be staying at Hibiscus!

We spent 5 days in the well-appointed and comfortable 'Sweet Nest' at Hibiscus Heights. It's the perfect space for a couple, with a set-up including an outdoor grill, patio and table, separate (indoor) dining table, tv/dvd (with movies there for you), and a nice four-poster bed. Everything has been well-planned and makes for a cozy space. We would definitely stay again. Paul and Gillian are knowledgable and great hosts – for everything from a car rental to groceries, they can hook you up.

Hibiscus Heights is just up de road (1 minute walk) from the village of Pleasant Prospect where you can find great food at Fish Pot (check out the live music on Fridays), take out from Joanne's, or great grilled fish from Harlequin. Although the Moon over Water's bass-heavy reggae and dancehall vibes can get tiring for the whole village, by the end of our stay the volume levels were coming down to a more reasonable level. On the bright side, next door is a super internet cafe run by a young entrepreneur. Ask for "Pretty Paul".

Further down the road and across the highway are the beaches of Grafton/Black Rock. A great beach for limin the day away, taking a swim or a nap, or a walk. Check the happy hour at the Seahorse for a great cocktail and sunset view. Hibiscus is also really close to Grange Bay, Mt. Irvine beach, and Turtle beach. If you love the water, you will love Tobago.

Enjoy the island vibes. And be "just cool".

I was already more than ten times in Tobago. "Hibiscus Heights" was most beautiful accommodation which I had ever booked.

The rooms fitted out tastefully and the service was great. Simply for feeling good, recommendable.

Thanks Gillian and Paul!

We so appreciated Paul and Gill letting us stay only 1 night in charming Sweet Nest. It was fully equipped with everything we needed and then some. Very comfortable and relaxing. Within walking distance to nice restaurants and great beach. Only negative is the noise from a local establishment down the street and some dogs.

Our Vote For Friendliness And Lush Island Yet!

If you are looking for a vacation that allows you to escape to a paradise Hibiscus Heights will do that. We visited many Caribbean Islands and this by far presents the most beautiful vegetation, flowers, sea scapes, and people yet. This location allows you to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, the most friendly people who appreciate you, and refreshes you beyond words. It hasn't been overtaken by tourism...it is a pure example of a typical rural village in Tobago. Gillian and Paul are the perfect hostess and host who treat you like special guests. Paul greeted us at the airport, stopped at a supermarket allowing us to purchase the initial order and helped take our suitcases to our home away from home. The studio is fully self contained allowing totally independent living while there. We cooked some meals including fresh fish that we traced from the boat, the fishermen's on site market to the frying pan all within an hour. Flying fish, tuna and dolphin were prepared by myself during our two week stay but wasn't nearly as delicious as at the many places to eat located nearby. They can COOK! Whatever combination of spices used during preparation is the most delicious I have ever eaten and so reasonably priced. Where can you eat for $5 – $8 per meal? That includes chicken, fish, or steak with rice, pasta or salad. Harleqin's provides that in a open restaurant nearby. Joanne prepares all her own food which allows you to taste delicious local fare. Cecilia makes you so welcome at her newly opened business featuring fresh fruit, cake and ice cream, breakfast as well as main meals. She is so friendly that she gave US a parting gift when we left. The only cash machine on the Caribbean coast is located there as well as a small market, several restaurants, and internet. We felt so welcomed in that little settlement.

While there we walked down every street and road to appreciate the area. Roosters, hens and chicks, parrots in cages, unique flowers, sheep, gorgeous birds, as well as neighbourly residents made each outing an adventure. The beach is perfect for good walks, rock formation make a perfect background for excellent photos, water is clear with several choices of calm to lots of wave action. The heat of the sun was surprisingly not intense but the temperatures in the mid 80s made for what we call our nicest summer day back home.

The bus stop is nearby and for $2 TT ($6 TT equals $1 US) you can travel to Scarborough, the capital, and spend the day. Don't be in a hurry to return as they often travel using Tobago time. We always make everything an adventure so while we awaited the return trip we enjoyed observing the school children dressed in their uniforms. They were courteous, respectful and typical youth except they each wore the uniform of their school.

We had a private tour of the island which featured poui trees dotting the deep green hills, Charlotteville tucked away at the bottom of the hillside with postcard beauty and finished the day with a fantastic meal at the famous Tree House restaurant. Our guide even stopped along the twisting road to pick a ripe papaya for all of us to share. You can't imagine the intense flavour. One small example of the genuine friendliness of the people of that area.

If you want every day to seem like two, drop into a comfort zone, read books, go to the beach, walk ,enjoy nature and warm caring people, visit Hisbiscus Heights.
