Arnos Vale Hotel - Reader Reports & Opinion

Arnos Vale Hotel Under New Management   14 Apr 2003

Steve Wooler from Long Melford, Suffolk, England

During the past week, I have received exciting news about the Arnos Vale Hotel.

Until recently, the Arnos Vale Hotel was managed by an Italian business, Sporting Vacanze, on behalf of local owners. I have now been informed that the management contract has been taken over by Carlo Cravanzola and Rolf Berthold and negotiations are well under way for them to acquire the property as well.

The previous manager of the Arnos Vale – whose attitude must be held largely responsible for the decline in popularity of the hotel over recent years – has left and Carlo Cravanzola has taken up residence as General Manager. Immediate changes are being made at service level. Other changes will obviously take a little longer. I suspect that visitors will find an immediate improvement in staff and management attitudes at the hotel.

It is Carlo and Rolf´s stated intention to restore the Arnos Vale Hotel to its former glory. I´m sure that every reader will join me in wishing them well and offering our very best wishes in their endeavour. Set in one of the most beautiful locations in Tobago, the Arnos Vale Hotel deserves to do well.

Good luck!

Steve, I've read all your many reports of your recent visit and noted that you dropped in at Arnos Vale at some point, but didn't report on it in any detail.Had everything about it already been said?I'm taking the family there at the end of the month and would appreciate any comments you have to add to the general perception of it being "tired".Forewarned is forearmed!! Having been to Antigua,Grenada and St.Lucia I must say that this is by far the best site I've come across for getting an in-depth feel for an island before setting off.The detail is fantastic(making formal guide books redundant)and the discussion forum is a mine of useful and unbiased comment!!!! I'm happy to add a report on the hotel and island when we get back, which would include the views of a teenage boy and a girl of eleven going on eighteen!! Keep up the good work! J.C.

Hi Steve, will do a full review of Arnos Vale if you would like- do you want photo's? Also we spent 4 nights on Trinidad P O S and San Fernando any interest in that? Interesting note on food. The food at Arnos Vale whilst being basic – was basic TOBAGAN not basic pies, chips and gravy as i fear many people who have not visited the area before may think. We had excellent breakfasts -probably some of the best croissant I have had anywhere (sorry France). Lunch was a help yourself affair of a great range of salads and hot mainly local dishes like (proper) peas and rice, pilau etc. together with chef(what a lovely lady) BAR-B-QING VARIOUS FISH, STEAK, CHICHEN ,PORK(the steaks were 10 oz. rump from the states. We did manage to get her to make Goat curry for us last Wednesday. Dinner.Without doubt the weak link.During out first 3 nights it was buffet-again good basic stuff, the starters being very basic, the soups very good local flavours. main courses were generally a choice of up to 6 dishes on a serve yourself basis. Quantity wise you could eat yourself silly – and you have seen i am no longer the slin elegant creature i once was!. desserts a disaster but not unexpected, even the Seahorse's are not overly exiting. Let me know about reviews

Arnos Vale/vaccinations

I'm taking the family to Arnos Vale at the end of March-it'll be our first visit to Tobago. Having had two fantastic visits to Anse Chastanet in St.Lucia in the last two years, with snorkelling and diving straight off the beach onto a protected marine park,Arnos Vale seemed to fit the bill.We are concerned about the rather mixed comments about the "tired" feel to the hotel.Does anyone have any recent comments to add about the hotel, beach and snorkelling/diving?We'll let you know our impressions on return........ Also we're getting mixed opinions on the vaccination requirements/recommendations for the island. Can anyone confirm this for me for visitors arriving direct from the UK? Thanks, J.C. ps:Excellent website-lots of invaluable and interesting stuff!!

Steve,

Recently discovered your site as I am researching a possible 2 week trip to Tobago in July. I am looking forward to reading your update of the site after your impending trip this month/Feb.

My parents opened the Arnos Vale Hotel in 1954 as the original management team employed by the owner Mr. Dibben, a wealthy builder from the Southampton area, who had bought the estate & built the hotel buildings. I was born in Tobago in 1958 and my parents bought the hotel around 1959/60. They eventually sold the hotel in 1976 and we all left Tobago for the UK.

I went back to Tobago a couple of times on holiday, but have not been there since 1982. I now want to show my wife & 2 sons where I grew up. Unfortunately, as we live in Hong Kong,it only makes sense to visit Tobago as part of our summer trip to the UK. July is not the most ideal month, but at least it will be cheaper and quiet ! I want to rent a villa either in the Arnos Vale area or further up either coast. Possible ones I've identified so far include Top O'Tobago, Montgomery House & The Sugar Mill, Sunset Valley Estate, Parrot Estate.

I would be very interested to hear your views after your trip, especially as you mention you will be staying in the Arnos Vale area at Villa Being (too expensive for us !). Given that I lived at Arnos Vale for 18 years in the heyday of its existence & Tobago's, I am probably setting myself up for a big disappointment !
