Arnos Vale Hotel - Reader Reports & Opinion

Beautiful Location, Rooms In Need Of A Refit.

It would be difficult to find a more attractively situated hotel than Arnos Vale, and we found that many of the clients here had been coming back for years. However, presumably they were happy with the tired, outdated rooms in desperate need of a refit. The gardens are super, and as birdwatchers we enjoyed the considerable variety of birds to be found in the grounds, and attracted to the feeders. The staff were (mostly) pleasant and helpful. Breakfasts were fine, but dinners were overpriced and not very good. One got the impression that the cooking was done for a captive market of people staying on full board. After two dinners here (costing about £30 each without wine) we ate elsewhere.

We stayed here for 4 days. A lovely old colonial style hous in a beautiful valley location with own beach and pool surrounded by exotic plants, trees and birdlife. Excellent view of sea from our balcony and very comfortable room. Most staff were very helpful (with one or two exceptions). The main problems were the limited choice of menu and snacks only available at the pool bar during the day, especially on BBQ night when some food was undercooked, late and puddings ran out!Other a la carte was very tasty with fresh fruit and vegetables from their own gardens....Some nights it was difficult to get a drink from the bar as it had closed VERY early .Our first night we were all sent out for a meal and this was excellent food in old sugar plantation surroundings. I think if you stay for 3 days or more then it would be best to hire a car. A good quiet location for birdwatchers, altho' have many day visitors to see hummingbird feeders and have tea and perhaps a cake (at outrageously expensive prices). The fruit punch by the pool brings back happy memories. The water was not very calm when we stayed ( unusual weather perhaps) and my partner did a bit of fishing from the rocks. We would go back!

Great For A Pretty "get Away From It" Holiday.

We stayed in two of the cottage rooms on the hillside which were to a very high standard and had wonderfull views. The food, although pricy, was all home made (including the ice cream) and was lovely although less appealing to our pre teens. We were told afterwards we should have asked the chef to make spagetti for them. The afternoon tea was also lovely.

This hotel is quiet isolated so a car is recommended.

Keith Valentine from U.K. visited in July 2006 and awarded  Four out of Five

We spent a week at Arnos Vale in July 2006 and it was memorable in more ways than one. For a nature lover, the location is sublime – gardens full of exotic birds, bats, trees and shrubs, land crabs and lizards, pristine coral reef just a few yards off the beach, complete with resident hawksbill turtle and shoals of technicolour fish, pelicans offshore and even (on one occasion) a large boa constrictor in a tree on the beach.

We were in one of the individual cottages on the hillside. It was spacious, comfortable and quite secluded – which may explain why it was targeted by burglars while we were at dinner one night ( I hope they have since improved the security of these cottages). Dinner, by the way, was enjoyable but overpriced and we were not that confident about venturing out onto unlit, un-signposted, potholed roads in our hire car to dine elsewhere. Other residents did venture out at night by taxi with no problems.

None of these negative factors spoiled a magical experience. If you like wildlife, snorkelling and beautiful, peaceful surroundings I think it is very hard to beat. If some of these comments have put you off staying, just call in for tea – and take your snorkel!

We very much enjoyed our stay at Arnos vale, it was pretty empty when we were there, which meant we had the beach, pool and restaurant to ourselves, very romantic!! the food was good too! Pirate the parrot kept us occupied every morning at breakfast, what a lovable bird!!!! a great place to get away from it all and relax.
