Hummingbird Heights - Reader Reports & Opinion
Holiday 2003 - Tobago 13 Jun 2003
Stewart from Chepstow , Wales
Steve Wooler´s Hummingbird Heights review is an excellent article which Jeanette and I can fully vouch for .We stayed in the guest room with a wonderful view over Scarborough , comfortable beds , and a nice private bathroom.
Breakfast with Shirley was the focal point for planning the day . Shirley´s local knowledge and personal attention really made the holiday for us . Access to her jeep on a daily hire basis was an added bonus , which meant we could go anywhere on the island we wished , and we didn´t have to wade through guide books to find places of interest .
Shirley recommended some excellent restaurants to eat out at night and prices were very reasonable . Our best day out was a trip through the rain forest , a visit to the bird sanctuary at Little Tobago , and lunch in a local restaurant at Speyside . The guide was introduced to us by Shirley .
All in all an excellent holiday , lovely accommodation , a super pool in the garden , and an excellent hostess .

6 Fantastic Days! 10 Jun 2003

Everything I would like to say about Hummingbird Heights has already been mentioned by other authors in these posts: the very nice b & b room overlooking Scarborough, the spacious pool, the convenient location and so on... But I want to emphasize once again Neil and Tracey's hospitality (and I am sure Shirley's as well although I only know her from the telephone and emails unfortunately)! During my six day stay in Scarborough I felt like staying with friends – it was a great time! I will definitely try to come back soon!

A Memorable Week

Hi
Just a short note to tell you how much we agree with your review of Hummingbird Heights and to let you know our experiences while holidaying in Tobago.
Although we'd had our holiday booked for a couple of months, four weeks before we actually went we decided to get married whilst we were there. Thanks to Shirley and her friend Maria, we accomplised this on our last full day in Tobago without any stress whatsoever and even managed to watch the match before we left for the ceremony!
All in all, although we were only in Tobago for a week we felt thoroughly de-stressted and fully relaxed by the end of it. We loved the accommodation and found Shirley and Grouch's very eager to help attitude an absolute delight. Roll on our first anniversary when we hope to visit the Tobago shores once again.

Hi,
As a recent guest at Hummingbird Heights, I can only add my two (T & T) cents' worth to all the positive feedback the place has been receiving here recently.
I found it an ideal base for exploring the South/West end of the island, particularly for a budget-conscious solo traveller like myself (EXTREMELY competitive prices, especially considering the facilities on offer, and no single room supplement!). Those of a more independent frame of mind have the option of renting a well-maintained jeep from the owners at a very reasonable rate, as I did for a few days. Or, if you prefer a more 'guided' approach, mine hosts Shirley or Neil (plus gardener, handyman, driver and general font of all wisdom Grouch) seem to always be on hand to accompany you, if you wish, on a trip to a choice beach, a happening dancehall or a tried and trusted eatery. Partly for this reason, I'd say that Hummingbird Heights was an ideal choice for women travelling to Tobago alone. What's more, it's also a gay-friendly location, which unfortunately can't be said for everywhere on an island where attitudes towards homosexuality are not always exactly enlightened! (Though, not being either female or gay myself, you'd have to just take my word on these last two points).
What else? Swimming pool. . . spotless modern rooms with tasteful and colourful decor (a special mention here for Lion and Tina of Batik Point at Buccoo, who supplied the hand-painted wall-hangings – check them out when you visit Sunday School if you're looking for clothing, jewellery and souvenirs which are a cut above the average offerings you'll find on the island – and please tell them Laurence sends his love!). . . a rapidly-maturing garden where you'll sight the eponymous hummingbirds. . . an elevated, breezy location. . . terrific views over Scarborough. . . and above all a welcome which will soon make you feel right at home.
And on the downside? Well Shirley, to be brutally honest with you, as far as I'm concerned a fish sandwich is a fish sandwich is a fish sandwich, whether or not it once enjoyed the power of flight!
One Love,
Laurence

Me and Mary had a wonderful holiday in Tobago staying at Hummingbird Heights near Scarborough. We were welcomed and taxied at the Airport, served ice cold rum punch at the poolside whilst our cases were taken room. Later we had flying fish sandwiches and watched a little cable TV (BBC news). The room and shared appartment (kitchen) was clean, colourful and had everything we needed. We hired a Jeep from Shirley (the owner) for 15 pounds a day (8 pound to fill the tank) and used it to see virtually every main beach on the island. Drinks were very reasonable – very large G & Ts were as little as £1-50 and beers 60 pence. The fresh fish were great – A whole gropuer for £2-40, barricuda – highly recommended and a wonderful red snapper barbecue by the side of the pool. Grouch the gardener was a useful source of information about the island regarding food and entertainment as was Shirley the owner of Hummingbird Heights. We danced at Sunday Scool and Green Light, we ate at Jemma's Seaview Kitchen, Shirvan Watermill, Salsa Kitchen, Tartaruga- all briiliant places to eat. The beaches were beautiful – our favourite was Canoe Bay. All in all a fantastic time was had and we couldn't have stayed anywhere better – see for yourself, visit Hummingbird Heights,
