Canoe Bay Resort - Reader Reports & Opinion

Great Family Vacation   21 Jan 2005

Jörg Weidenbörner from Essen, Germany

Hy everyone,

if you are thinking about to book a vacation at the canoe bay you are on the right way.

We have booked a 3 weeks stay from december 2004 to January 2005 (3 adults and two kids (2+4 years old).

We had appartment No. 3 which was very good. The fridge is superb and the appartment was better than the expected caribean standard. The terrace in front of the appartment is great. During our stay we had some problems with the satellite TV, but that isn´t too important.

Appartment No. 1 is better if you are travelling with more adults because of the fact, that it has two queen sized beds in each sleeping room.

What is missing in the appartments are telefons: You have to bring your own mobile to stay in contact with the rest of the world.

The beach is perfect for infants and toddlers, even when the sun huts directly at the beach are pretty small, but Charmin (the owner) told us that she has order some sunshades for the guest.

Dining is not worth it at Canoe bay. we have tried it only once and they brought the pre-cooked food by taxi to the restaurant. It was cold and the quality was poor. Snacks like hamburgers are fine and can be ordered during the daytime. Cocktails, except a bad rum punch, are not available.

The personel is friendly and helped where ever they can.

Room cleaning could be a little bit better. From time to time even under beds and cupboards should be cleaned up aswell as the use of a wet mop is helpful instead of just sweaping.

If you have neighbours (which we had only a few days, even during high season) it can get loud, becouse noise attenuation between the rooms is poor.

But as I said before, that all doesn´t matter too much in comparison to the great location and the relaxing atmosphere.

Pricewise this accommodation is absoultly great, too.

We enjoyed our stay very much and can recommend these appartments.

What a show. Stayed 9 nights, loved every moment of it. Even when Hurricane Ivan came to visit. The staff were phenomenal and the place was incredible. Couldn't ask for anything better. Of all the Hotels and Beach Resorts I visited including the HILTON, this one is tops. Loved it all guys and hopefully Tony you may have some news on the Camera.

Good Stay At Canoe Bay   13 Sep 2004

K. Boone from New York

I spent a week at Canoe Bay in mid-August and found it to be excellent value. With an offer of stay-6-nights/get the 7th free, available through http://www.holidayintobago.com the cost was just a little over $50 US a night (including tax!). The grounds are beautiful, spacious and peaceful, the beach very pleasant. I don't know what it's like during high season, but it was very uncrowded without one's feeling isolated either. Laid-back and relaxing, with especially glorious sunsets!

My studio apartment was spacious and well-appointed. Get a first-floor (2nd-floor for Americans!) room to catch the ocean breezes and a lovely view.

Just a few caveats. The Woolers are right -- a car is absolutely essential, as Canoe Boy is located down a long dirt track (which adds to the uncrowded charm, in my opinion). Don't plan on strolling into town from here! Although there is mention of a restaurant, Canoe Bay is better viewed as a self-catering accommodation, at least in low season. The restaurant was not open during my stay, although the pleasant beach bar was open in the afternoons. Not a problem, with the aforementioned essential car, but you'll need to make that essential early morning coffee yourself! The apartments are well-equipped with dishes, utensils, a two-burner hotplate, electric kettle, toaster oven, and refrigerator, so cooking is very plausible. Lastly, the lack of in-room telephones may present a few inconveniences, although guests may use the hotel phone when the office is open. A guest with a need to make regular calls, or be regularly accessible, however, would want to have a workable mobile.

I should add that I am a woman who traveled solo; I didn't find Canoe Bay's relative isolation to feel unsafe, somewhat the contrary actually. The staff are congenial and helpful, and all in all, it's a very good place to stay. If you're looking for pampering and amenities, look elsewhere, but if you're looking for a very clean, comfortable, VERY reasonably priced, beautiful and "unspoiled" little corner of paradise -- as I was -- I would definitely recommend Canoe Bay.

Canoe Bay Resort   09 Dec 2003

I'm planning my second trip to Tobago and one of the accomodation options is Canoe Bay resort. I would be grateful for any information anyone has on the resort or accomodation - particularly the two bed apartments. I've seen one or two references to the beach as being very pleasant but not much about the resort itself.

I would be very grateful for any comments.

Thanks

Barry
