Hummingbird Heights - Reader Reports & Opinion
Just Returned From Hummingbird Heights 25 Apr 2003
Alan Jones from UK
Me and Mary had a wonderful holiday in Tobago staying at Hummingbird Heights near Scarborough. We were welcomed and taxied at the Airport, served ice cold rum punch at the poolside whilst our cases were taken room. Later we had flying fish sandwiches and watched a little cable TV (BBC news). The room and shared appartment (kitchen) was clean, colourful and had everything we needed. We hired a Jeep from Shirley (the owner) for 15 pounds a day (8 pound to fill the tank) and used it to see virtually every main beach on the island. Drinks were very reasonable - very large G & Ts were as little as £1-50 and beers 60 pence. The fresh fish were great - A whole gropuer for £2-40, barricuda - highly recommended and a wonderful red snapper barbecue by the side of the pool. Grouch the gardener was a useful source of information about the island regarding food and entertainment as was Shirley the owner of Hummingbird Heights. We danced at Sunday Scool and Green Light, we ate at Jemma's Seaview Kitchen, Shirvan Watermill, Salsa Kitchen, Tartaruga- all briiliant places to eat. The beaches were beautiful - our favourite was Canoe Bay. All in all a fantastic time was had and we couldn't have stayed anywhere better - see for yourself, visit Hummingbird Heights,
from a very satisfied customer

Review Of Hummingbird Heights 16 Apr 2003
Jacqui Jones from Bristol
My Partner and I visited Hummingbird Heights in January 2003 for a two week holiday. Having read the review on this website, we would like to endorse everything that has been written and would thoroughly recommend this accommodation it to any potential visitor. We had a wonderful time. Shirley and her Team couldn't have made us any more welcome. We visited many unspoilt beaches and places we just would not have found without her help. The food is fantastic and very low cost, wonderful sand, sea and rum! You must visit Sunday School and Green Light for the dancing and fun.

Holiday Report 4 - Hummingbird Heights 23 Mar 2003

Hummingbird Heights offers a choice of either a single two-bedroom self-contained self-catering apartment, or a single double guest room with its own bathroom available on a bed and breakfast basis.
Hummingbird Heights must surely be one of the most unusual properties on Tobago. Located in a mixed suburban area on the outskirts of Scarborough, the tower-like building rises from the steep hillside in total contrast to the neighbouring local timber houses. This is one of the beauties of Tobago, where expensive modern villas often stand cheek by jowl with local housing and neighbours appear totally oblivious to the differences. Visitors can happily make the 15 minute walk into Scarborough. Even during the evening or night, they will invariably only be met by smiling faces and cheery greetings.
The terraced gardens of this newly-opened hillside property will be a spectacular riot of colour when fully mature and English owners, Shirley and Neil Rogers, are successfully doing everything possible to encourage birds and hummingbirds in particular, to the gardens.
Guests are met at the airport and driven the short fifteen minutes to Hummingbird Heights. Guests always comment on the decorative hand-painted mosaic wall surrounding the car park terrace on arrival. Just a few steps higher is the large swimming pool that dominates the frontage. Stopping to enjoy the views, Shirley or Neil will welcome you to the property with a glass of rum punch and invite you to take a first refreshing dip in the pool, followed later by a delightful flying-fish sandwich.
The pool area is adequately furnished with sun-loungers and has adequate shade throughout the day. A large fridge and barbeque unit are provided for use by guests. Being a tall building set on a hillside, Hummingbird Heights will not be suitable for anyone. The main apartment is on the second floor and the guestroom on the third, but these are accessed by short flights of stairs with several landings so did not prove onerous in practice. The advantage of the building’s architecture is the spectacular views provided from the windows and balconies and the cooling breezes blowing in from the Atlantic coast.
The main apartment is very spacious and comprises two bedrooms (one double bed, two single beds) with a shared bathroom and a large living area comfortably furnished with two pull-out sofa-beds, a dining table and open-plan kitchen area. A large balcony provides a pleasant seating area and gives wonderful views over Scarborough and the Atlantic Ocean. Linen and towels are provided (not beach towels), but there is no maid service. The kitchen area is fully equipped and the fridge stocked with a welcome pack of basic supplies for the first night and breakfast.
The guestroom is situated on the third floor next to Shirley and Neil’s apartment. Guests are invited to share their lounge and other facilities. The guest room is attractively furnished with two single beds and its own private bathroom next door.
Shirley and Neil take turns in Tobago, managing the property and looking after guests. Shirley was in residence during our stay. We knew from other reports that she cannot do enough to make every guest’s visit a memorable one. The guestroom accommodation at Hummingbird Heights is particularly appropriate to single ladies travelling alone, because Shirley is always delighted to accompany guests on tours or around the island, should this wish a friendly companion.
Having only recently opened, the current rates for the Hummingbird Heights apartment are a bargain at £100 (approx. US$/€155) per person per week rising to £400 (US$/€620) for five or six guests per week. This represents true value for money. The rate for the guestroom, available on a full bed and breakfast basis, is also £100 (approx. US$/€155) per week per person.
Hummingbird Heights is a welcome addition to the Tobago holiday accommodation market. We have absolutely no hesitation in recommending it to visitors seeking this type of accommodation and current rates represent a true bargain.
