We stayed in the Blue Marlin suite, and it was sweet!
The views were unbelievable, the room was nice (no hot water), we had a lot of privacy and felt the room was perfect for our trip with an infant ( he napped while we ate the included breakfast below the room with the stairway within arms reach and sight heading up to the room)
Additionally we enjoyed snorkeling in the bay with one person basking on the deck while the baby napped.
The staff is friendly and helpful.
A tip: the arranged pick-up didn't go so smooth and we ended up hiring a cab for half the price both times.
Car rental is worth it, especially to go into the rain forest and over to pirates bay.
Castara is a gorgeous little fishing village, we bought tuna from a fisherman as fresh as it gets.
The room was clean and pretty, with an electronic safe. Panoramic views.
well worth the extra money.

For the two nights I stayed at the Naturalist I had to switch rooms, and so I got a taste of two of the rooms instead of just one. I spent the second night of my stay in Salmon, a cozy, fully self- contained room just a few footsteps away from the sea. I didn't much mind the switch from the Blue Marlin Suite on the first night because I gave short notice and was "squeezed" into the schedule..... Thank you Ancle.
My one night stay at the Blue Marlin Suite was more than I expected. The view of the sun setting over the beautiful Caribbean Sea is absolutely breathtaking. This short get away gave to me exactly what I needed (stress relief), and proved to be much more than I bargained for. The true surprise however, came later in the evening. On Sundays, there is a buffet style Bar- B- Que Dinner done at the Naturalist, which features some form of local entertainment everytime. It was fantastic! I had no intentions of leaving that place to return to my normal routine and my job!!!
I definitely plan on returning soon!

We loved our stay at the Naturalist. We had stayed a couple of days up the road at the Sea Level and it was like moving to the Hilton after that experience.
Ancil, the owner, was very accomadating and informative.
The room, although small, was very clean and well maintained. The staff looked after the room every day and we were very pleased with their service
The best part is the location, right on the beach.
The village is a very friendly place to be, although it can seem small after a few days. We bought all our food and bread from the local venders. Also it is great to get the fresh seafood in the afternoon when the fisherman come in from their day on the ocean.
The two beaches are great for sunbathing and swimming and there are some nice walks, especially up to the waterfall.
We rented a car from Ancil, which was in good condition and well priced. It is almost essential to rent a car if you want to see any of the country. Other transport is just to unreliable. We reccomended the Naturalist to our honeymooning son & daughter-in-law. They stayed in the Kingfish room and agree with our synopsis.
I would highly reccomend "The Naturalist" to anyone going to Castara.

I found the accomodation at the Naturalist Beach Resort simple and clean with all the facilties for self contained accomodation including en-suite shower/toilet, double bed, kitchen and Air conditioner for $40/night per room. Excellent price.
Ancil George, the owner is ready to sort out any problems you have and also has cars for hire.
Its location was right on the beach with access to a Cafe, as well as three resturants and bar within 5 mintues walking distance. I recommend the Almond Tree.
Castara is a quiet "working" fishing village in the central part of Tobago. Is within 30 minutes from the airport and no more 30/40 minutes to the north of the island and Central Ridge for birdwatchers. It is definitely a place to relax and chill.
But you can get access to a variety of tours/activities in Castara including trips to Trinidad.
It would be adviseable to change some travellers cheques/dollars at the airport. Although, you can usually change dollars at the beach resort and/or one of the resturants at a fair rate. My advice is to take US dollars as opposed to TC's.
Crime in Tobago is little or non-existent. I felt safe walking both around Castara and beyond loaded with camera equipment.
And the people are extremely friendly and usually ready for a good chat.
