As my father's from Tobago I had been to Charlotteville several times before. It's an astoundingly beautiful place. Perfect romantic getaway or family vacation spot. The White House is a similar accommodation to the Top River Pearl, but less expensive, less crowded and more private. The two rooms (myself and my girlfriend stayed in both) are simple and clean, with tiled floors, high ceilings, robust beds with mosquito nets, one ceiling fan and one floor fan, proper bathrooms with hot water showers, and with basic kitchens. The view from the sea view apartment is great, but it also shows that that apartment is the more popular of the two. The two apartments are next to each other and share the same veranda, separated by a low wooden fence (and with two plastic tables), which makes it suitable for friends or a family to rent both of them. The owner, Steve Salfield, is very accommodating. On the whole I would say that the White House is an excellent choice, especially considering the rent.

Our recent stay at the White House was a wonderful escape. We stayed all over the island so were only able to spend two night at the White House but it was a delightful place to spend the time.

Our apartment was very airy and light, the windows in the bedroom opened out onto a beautiful garden of brightly blooming flowers and trees. We slept with the windows open and weren't bothered by mosquitos at all.

Although we didn't make much use of the kitchen, there were plenty of cutlery and utensils and a small cooker and fridge (which we did make use of for the Carib!)

The White House is situated on a hill overlooking Charlotteville so it affords a great view of the village. The walk into the village is less then 10 minutes and is a very pleasant stroll.

We would definitely recommend the White House as a great place to stay in this fishing village, which continues to have a simple charm about it. The people are friendly and helpful, the beaches are lovely and the lack of tourists around the place gives you the feel of being the first travellers to ever come here!

Also - Sharon the Housekeeper was the loveliest, friendliest person you could ever meet!

My husband and I escaped the dreariness of upstate New York to the White House in unspoiled Charlotteville this February. We were greeted by Sharon, the lovely local woman who carefully tends the house. She welcomed us warmly, having stocked the kitchen with the basics (bread, juice, cheese) to get us started. She even showed me the basics of local cookery by taking me out to the garden to find shadon beni--the local cilantro equivalent. We took advantage of the fully equipped kitchen to prepare fish from the fishermen's co-op along with local vegetables and fruits. The apartment was a perfect getaway with a very pleasant verandah that extended our living space with a view to Man o' War Bay and the forest.

We would highly recommend the White House (locally known as the "Castle"). Steve and Jackie Salfield have created a special, private little paradise here. Sharon and Cat (the handyman and cab driver, should you need a ride) provide great and friendly service.

The local restaurants, fish, shops, "from the beach" snorkeling at Pirate's Bay, with a late afternoon cold beer from Lyda's combine to make this a new favorite in the Caribbean!
