White House - Reader Reports & Opinion

This was our least favorite accommodation on the island. We chose it for price, location, and the description/pictures on the website. We were quite disapointed! We were the only ones staying there at the time, so had no one to compare notes with on other options.
The good parts are that the house is right in the rainforest and the view of the trees and wildlife from the balcony is quite lovely. Sharon, the housekeeper, is also very nice and she is quite a fun character too! She has worked for the owner a very long time and is an amazingly loyal worker! I hear she is quite the cook too.
Downsides are numerous however. The room and bed are quite tiny (by comparison with other places we stayed on the island). the kitchen is tiny and not nearly as well equiped as equally priced places we stayed at.
As soon as you turn on the water, it sounds like there are demons in the walls! The plumbing needs help! The shower is less of a steady stream of water, more short violent bursts of air and steam. not good!
there is no air conditioning and so you have no choice but to leave the windows open - big mistake! we tried using the ceiling fan, but it made noises worse than the plumbing and did not seem safe.
The mosquito net reeked of chemicals and we needed to air it out for a night before we could set it up. unfortunately, the night we did not use it, we woke up at midnight covered in blood and mosquito bites. there are no screens over any of the windows and so the place quickly become infested with 1000000 of mosquitos - makes sense for being in the rainforest. we did set up the net for the 2nd night, but it was not functional because of holes and generally being too small.
All that said, Charlottville is quite a bit more "off the beaten track" than the other places we stayed, so i am not sure if any of the other accommodation options in that town were any better. but in my opinion, i would look around first before settling for the White House.

Lovely place, great location and hosts combined with super value. Recommended! Charlotteville is just down the hill and you really feel part of the town when you stay at the "castle".
It's basic but nice and clean. The view (ocean view room) must among the best in the town - waking up to that vista is quite special.

The White House was just what my family needed to bring the love back. My family and I never traveled to Tobago before so we used the internet to find The White House, and it was a Blessing. I traveled with my 10month son, and husband. The apartment was clean and comfortable. The view was beautiful, if you love nature this is the place for you. Every morning waking up to the morning sun and the singing of birds. Sharron the house keeper met us upon arrival, very sweet lady, with out me even asking gave me a play pen to use for my son. Which came in handy. The Village, small and peaceful, the people were very friendly. We ate out everyday at a nice place over looking the water. The owner Steve very professional, we made a lot of last min changes and Steve was still welcoming after all we put him and Sharron through. Any one who enjoys nature and, just wants to relax, The White House is the place.

We stayed at white house in July 2009 together with our 8 year old daughter. She got an extra matress on the floor for additional 10 US. We just had to bring an own mosquito net for her. The house is very nice. Because of it´s structure it was never extremly hot inside the room. You could walk to pirate´s bay in around 25 minutes which was O.K. The village itself is also nice, you can buy all the basics and you also find some restaurants open. The only annoying thing were the mosquito´s at the beach.
All in all we had a really relaxing stay.

My brother and I used this website extensively when planning our recent trip to Tobago so of course wanted to leave comments for others.
We sadly are back in the UK now but spent 5 nights at the White House a mere couple of weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
We were greeted by the lovely house keeper Sharon who even took us to buy fish so we got a good deal and picked all the bits of forest off our clothes so she could wash them when were out for the day... what a star.
We stayed in the sea view apartment and as the other apartment was empty it was very private and peaceful. The apartment (more studio) had a really lovely feel to it with whitewashed walls and teracotta tile flooring throughout. The lovely big windows opened up to make a cool airy space and provided lovely views through the lush vegetation of the garden to the sea beyond. The balcony to the side was very private and looks over the adjacent rainforest, also with the lockable door to the garden it was totally safe to leave our dive kit outside drying. Many an hour was spent at night watching the fire flies in the massive bamboos. The apartment is basically equiped but to be honest it had everything we needed and we self catered almost every meal... the mossie net is something we were very grateful for too.
Charlottesville itself has a very local feel with a fish co-op at the centre, a small general store and one or 2 other small shops around. We mostly ate in with the fresh local tuna being so lovely and available each day. Beach wise the Charlottesville beach is more of a working beach (lovely at sunset) but the Pirates Bay just along was lovely with great snorkelling on the right hand side and we had the place to ourselves most of the day.
The only downside was that Charlottesville seems to have a far larger population of cockerals than anywhere else on the island.... even as a veggie I did start to dream about the various ways to cook a cockeral when they work me at 3 or 4am!!!
On the whole I would say that a car is a must to get the most out of the north of the island and Charlottesville is lovely for a few days. I would wholey recommend the white house, its a lovely calm, airy and private caribean apartment. Great value for money and excellent people are involved so the booking, payment and arrival were all very easy. All in all great all round.
