Visited bars, restaurants and shops in Tobago

Post by Roland Siebenhorn »

Just back from Tobago I would like to share our experiences of visited restaurants
and other businesses with you. Our main holiday was a sailing trip on catamaran "Picante"
from Tobago to Grenada and further to the Grenadines, but we've spent a couple of
days on Tobago, ate in some restaurants and stocked up the ship with groceries.

Catamaran Picante:
Based on Tobago, Captain Markus offers mainly full day sailing trips and sunset sails, but
also multi-day tours round of Tobago or to the Grenadines on request. The boat is well maintained, the bar well stocked (Wine, Beer, Rum and other spirits as well as alcohol-free beverages) and Markus convinced us with his delicious fried Mahi-Mahi fish, baked potatoes and home made garlic butter at the captains dinner. A huge sun sail covers the front trampolin from the sun and with the carried Kayak can you explore the bays of Tobago.

Jade Monkey Casino, Bar & Grill, Milford Road, Crown Point:
Lively outdoor spot with attached casino (didn't visit). Great for drinks, but food is
ambivalent. Grilled chicken and the burgers looked good, but my chicken wings with fries
have been just average. Both were not crispy.....

Drunken Joe's Sports Bar, Corner Milford Road / Old Store Bay Road, Crown Point:
Good American food, not stingy with the rum in the Rum'n'Coke! Plenty of screens to watch
sport events, swimming pool in the backyard.

Bar Hop-In, Shirvan Road (behind Basils Restaurant):
My personal insiders tip! Excellent ribs, jerk chicken and pulled pork from the smoking oven,
accompanied with cool drinks from the bar. One of the few local bars on Tobago which set value on interior and lighting. Nothing for the romantic evening, often loud music but lively atmosphere.

La Cantina, Milford Road, Crown Point:
What can I say? THE best Pizza I had on the island, huge and made in the wood-fired oven. Couldn't be better in Italy!

Seahorse Inn, Grafton Beach Road:
Upscale restaurant but worth every Penny! Excellent food and service, nice outdoor sitting.
I ordered the slow braised pork belly with crackling and spicy shrimp with Madeira sauce, which looked interesting on the menu and it was excellent!

Boathouse, Little Beach, Castara:
Great location directly on the beach. My favorite rum punch on the island, take care if you order more than two..... Food also very delicious. The owner Sharon prepares to every meal
an extra plate of vegetables. I had the curry shrimps which was delicious!

Bago's Beach Bar, Pigeon Point Road:
Haven't tried the food, but the spot is always good for a couple of drinks before or
after the beach and/or sunset. They moved the bar counter to the opposite wall, the view to the sea is much better now, altough still blocked of a small wall....

Golden Grove Meat Shop, Golden Grove Road (Old Buccoo Road):
Excellent fresh and frozen meat. We bought tenderloin steaks, beef patties, minced meat and shrimps, all in best quality. The location is a bit remote, reachable only by car.

Time to wine, Milford road, near Calvary church, Bon Accord:
Quality wine and spirits shop with distinguished advice. Wine is not cheap on Tobago due
to high import tax, so the prices for a decent bottle starts at 88 TT up to ........ We bought
red and white wine in the mid-price segment by recommendation of the owner and weren't disappointed. The whole shop is cooled for the best storage of the liquids.

We enjoyed our 6th visit on Tobago but noticed a lot of changes. The island seems full
of construction sides, especially in the Crown Point area. It is rumored that a new shopping
mall will open next year........
Cheers, Roland
