Do local shops sell beer and rum?

Post by Julia C. »

Not that I'm an alcholic you understand!
It's just that we'll be staying in Castara, self catering and probably won't hire a car for the whole of our stay. So for the odd evening in or saluting the sun sets before going out to eat; being able to buy some suitable refreshments locally would be useful. :)

No problem, Julia !
These essential things are available in Castara. As You say, You are no trained alcoholic. So one tip for You : Stay away from BUSH-RUM. It will go up and down Your throat.Like an elevator.
Have a great time !

Hi Julia !!

Don`t miss to try the "coconut rum". It is sweet, has 40vol. and tastes just great with any kind of juice. You also have a nice variety of sizes
you could buy your rum. It starts with a DRINK, then there is the NIP,
next comes the flask and bigger sizes wich are all good for the "schwipps"
(sorry..what is the english word for that??).
The best thing is that, if there is any shop open, it is, most the times, a rum shop.
By the way...my, unfortunately empty, bottle of Puncheon says:
"Not less then 75%vol." Maybe there are different types ?

Hi Beverley

Yes, you'll find it right next to the caviare counter.

You did say "good" champagne, didn't you? To be honest, I suspect you'll find little but cheap sparkling wine anywhere but at the one or two specialist wine shops on the island. I would suggest you stock up at the wine shop in the little arcade opposite PennySavers at Canaan - on the way from the airport.

Thanks Steve. We want to get some champagne for a wedding we are going to there, but have heard that some airlines are funny about transporting it. Seems a shame to toast the bride and groom with fizzy wine....

Hi again, Beverley

As this thread was specifically about buying booze in Castara, I assumed your question related to buying champagne in Castara. Mind you, the answer remains the same wherever you are staying on Tobago. It certainly doesn't make sense to take champagne over with you - but just don't expect to pick up a case in a local rum shop.

There was a useful discussion of this subject a few weeks ago in http://www.mytobago.info/forum/viewtopic.php?P=4683

Hi
You can buy champagne at duty free in Gatwick and lug it over. Or they do sell champagne in the alcohol shop at Pennysavers in Canaan and they sell the more expensive sort in the wine shop (Fernandez i think its called) which is in the small mall opposite Pennysavers.
Enjoy!!

can't you get champers on the plane duty free? I realize that it may depend on who you travel with, but I would have thought that it would be a possibility.

Hi Beverly !!

I am sure that you can buy champagne on Tobago.
I saw Veuve Cliquot and Taittinger. I think it was by Almandoz
in Scarborough. As i will go into town tomorrow i will check it out
and then can give you a price as well.

Hi again !!
Yes, it is by Almandoz in Scarborough.
He has Moet&Chandon, Veuve Cliquot and Taittinger.
Prices from 288-391TT Dollars (ca.48-65USD).
He is, anyway, my favourite wholesaler for any kind of drinks
(yes, he also sells milk and juices!!).
Just on top Scarborough oposite of TSTT.

Champagne

Post by James Blackshaw »

You can get Champagne in Penny Savers in Canaan and also in the Wine Store opposite side of road towards Crown Point. Prices were not completely ridiculous.

Also for the Rum fiends do try the Angostura 8 year old. Bit more expensive, but quite deliciously smooth.

Thanks everyone for your help. In the end we packed some in suitcases and a friend bought some in Duty Free, which although she had to declare as she was over the limit, there was no charge.
