Nice one Tobago !

Post by Stuart H »

Just a few reports on our findings during a two week visit to Tobago. We (a mixed group of 7 40 - 70 year olds) made extensive use of the myTobago website which was an excellent source of information ! In general we tried to eat local food and were largely successful in trying out the Caribbean Cuisine. Here's what we found:

We tried several of the Food Huts in Store Bay and found them to be very enjoyable. Generally good value for money and tasty with it. Chicken and goat roti were popular as was the Crab and Dumpling (although without a hammer, somewhat difficult to get into at times !). Bake n Shark excellent from Miss Trims. Beetroot punch a novelty as was Sea moss punch and lime juices excellent throughout. :)

Marcia's - excellent on the two occassions we visited. Food was well presented and generous portions. Service good with plenty of info on the dishes provided too. Good value for money but despite this few other diners were present. Excellent bread fruit salad and Casava pudding. Fish was tasty too ! (our party averaged 110TT per person)
:)

House of Pancakes - again one we returned too. Excellent pancakes and good value for money (generally 24TT-45TT for main courses) House special and jumbo pancake (36TT and 42TT) both excellent with fruit cup and eggs and bacon too ! Service could be quicker but very popular and well worth a visit. :)

Panache - run by the owners of House of Pancakes and although the food was good quality our party felt that it was rather pricey (party averaged around 150TT per person) :(

Ru-B-Lou's - visited on the very high recommendation of this website - a VERY considerable disappointment. We felt it was pricey, 95TT -125TT for a main course alone. The fish was lovely, well cooked and tasty BUT and it is a HUGE BUT every dish came served with a considerable portion of what appeared to be "tinned" peas, rather hard carrots and two school dinner scoops of mashed potato & tartare sauce with the fish - how Caribbean is that ? We mistakenly took "home-style cooking" on the myTobago website to mean Caribbean Homestyle not what we were served with.

The meal was interrupted by the roar of jets preparing for take off or the reverse thrust of landing on the runway all of 100 yards away.

Sorry but we did not enjoy it at all and a disappointing way to end what had been a tasty two weeks in Tobago!

Speyside - Jemma's - rather slow and busy, very touristy. We left before anyone had even provided a menu and went next door to Redmans

Redmans - excellent local cooking. Super value for money and great setting. A real feel of the Caribbean. Good sized portions, excellent flavours and good service. Worth another visit. :) :)

Charlotteville - Eastmans - We were looking for something simple and cheap, we were not disappointed ! This was a small cafe in the centre of the town looking out over the beach and the fishing boats. A rather limited menu (Chicken & Chips or Fish & Chips) and a bit of a wait BUT WELL WORTH IT !!!! We opted for the fish and chips. Each plate had two large and VERY tasty Black Fin Tuna steaks in a seasoned coating with chips. Tasty? Some of the best fish we tasted in Tobago. Value? The dinner for two with drinks came to 76TT. Go there but go early, the next guests were restricted to Chicken and Chips.
:) :) :)

Parlatuvier - Riverview - very similar to Redmans review. Good wholesome food. Excellent value for money, good service and a chef who was prepared to spend time to discuss the dishes we had eaten. All round a very enjoyable experience and very Caribbean. Worth another visit.
:) :)

Rosie's Bakery (Bon Accord) - very simple takeaway or dine-in (two seats) roadside bakery. This was my favourite of ALL the places we ate. It is located half a mile east of the House of Pancakes and provides, in my opinion, "THE" best Bakes on the Island. Maximum price was 15TT, most were less than 10TT, with a menu including flying fish, salt fish, sausage, smoke herring etc. etc. Two different types of bake available and hops too (these were between 4 and 9TT). Hot and very fresh hops were available for around 6.5TT (8 in a bag). Selection of drinks and cakes also available. What made this stand out from many of the others reviewed here is that it was populated by local people on their way to work or having a morning break from work, it was not priced to take advantage of the tourist market and it was good wholesome, tasty and filling food. My first stop next time I land at Crown Point.
:) :) :)

Natural Mystic - Not strictly a restaurant but actually some of the best food we tasted - day sail on a trimaran with a BBQ cooked by the skipper. The fish was simply the best we had ANYWHERE on (or rather off) the Island. :) :) :)

Pizza Boys (Crown Point) - some of the party were willing to have a change and opted for a pizza. It was over half an hour late and soggy. Say no more.

We had a very enjoyable two weeks on the island and sampled some excellent food. Nice one Tobago !
