Hi - I have been reading this forum for a few months now - ever since we decided to visit Tobago for the first time. This is my first question (I'm sure it will be one of many) and I hope some-one can give me the answer. My preferred choice of drink is wine - does anyone have any idea how much an average bottle of wine would cost in a supermarket? I am sure I will enjoy a rum punch (or three!!) but would like to know if the wine is affordable.
Thanks in advance

Re: General question on wine
Hello Deb,I am not sure about the price of a bottle in the supermarkets but it is about TT$120 in the wine merchants.I normally get a 3litre box fron Pennysavers for about TT$150.

Thanks David- that seems very reasonable to me - nice to know I can afford a wine box or 2 inbetween sampling some rum punches!! Many thanks for the info.
Re: General question on wine
David, what does the wine in boxes taste like, I presume that it is good or you would not buy it, or is it just as an alternative mixer with your white oak? just a little dubious as the price seems very cheap compared to bottle prices.

Re: General question on wine
Linda,I am a red wine drinker so in Tobago I normally buy Hardy's Shiraz,or,beleive this or not,Fish Eye Shiraz.I have not tasted the white wines, however I do know that both have more whites than reds available. The wine is very acceptable, not connoisseur, but definitely table or sipping wine.

Re: General question on wine
I can't say that I know the first thing about wine, despite the best efforts of several friends and family to educate me, but there's a boxed Chardonnay in my 'fridge that has kept very well since it was opened several weeks ago and it tastes fine to me!! I'm a white wine drinker myself, so can only give that side of the story! They have a fair selection of wines in both Pennysavers and Morshead, and there's a small wine shop in the precinct opposite Pennysavers in Canaan which does more of the specialist-type. Although it's pricier here than your average US / UK bottle, it's not horrendously expensive. Generally you'll pay more, obviously, if you're drinking it in bars / restaurants, but for home consumption, it works out at around GBP10 - 15 (US$20 - 30) for a box.
And on that note, purely for educational purposes, I ought to go and have a glass to make sure that it hasn't turned to vinegar since my last glass!! One can never be too careful!!

Re: General question on wine
I usually drink red wine, so I think I really ought to buy at least one box while I am there, purely for research purposes ofcourse , do tend to stick to local drinks in Tobago, but a glass of red would be nice too.
