La Tartaruga (Nov/Dec 2008)

Post by PeterV »

During the month we spent in Tobago, my wife and I voted this the best restaurant on the island.

We ate their twice, and Ricardo was our waiter both times.

On both visits, the pasta was FABULOUS, homemade, and fresh. The sauces were overall very good, and the cream-based sauces were exceptional. The "Ravioli fatti in casa" (ravioli in sage/cream sauce) was a particular favorite.

On our first visit, we chose from the menu in the conventional way. We asked Ricardo to suggest appropriate wines -- the restaurant's wine cellar is AMAZING, and Ricardo is very knowledgeable. His suggestions (priced by the glass, believe it or not) were excellent.

On our second visit, we did something we typically do only at restaurants in which we have extreme confidence: We asked our waiter Ricardo to order for us... bring us whatever was good, and pair everything with appropriate wines. He asked us what we liked, if we had any allergies or didn't particularly like other things (fish, shellfish?).... We could not have been happier with the result: We started with a sparkling wine aperitif (sorry... can't remember WHAT it was except terrific), followed by a collection of appetizers including different types of pate (and wine to PERFECTLY accompany them). For mains, we had the tagliatelle (one order of tagliatelle Capperi one of tagliatelle Napolitana), and also an order of the Gnocchi. Again, we were treated to appropriate wines. We ended our dinner with gelato and special after-dinner drinks.

The food, wine, and service were both excellent. Not "Tobago excellent", but rather excellent on a world-class scale. Seriously, we couldn't have been happier.

The wine cellar is truly first rate. Ask to see it, if you're interested in such things. They buy wine futures in Italy and have both great vintages and those wines from the smaller, less well-known wineries located near those that are famous.

I highly recommend La Tartaruga for a terrific dinner in Tobago.
