Various Restaurant Reports

Post by Sue Noble »

House of Pancakes: Our favourite! we wish they were open for evening dinner and I did suggest they could make a killing if they were. We had to get there by 8.30 to guarentee a seat it was so popular. Lovely, lovely owners with a dry sense of humour who thought my husband was Gordon Brown! and continued to make jokes through the week about the state of the economy. They don't just do pancakes here either. Dave had Shark Bake, we mostly had egg and bacon with their lovely bread served with fruit which was a nice touch.

Definitely recommend this to everyone. :D :D :D :D :D

Bonkers: We were advised to book a restaurant in advance seeing as we arrived on Christmas eve and we were advised that Bonkers were open that evening and Boxing day evening. We had a choice of a set 3 course meal comprising of a range of range of international and Tobagan food. Quality of food was very good but portions were far too small. This was our first meal in Tobago and we were shocked by the price but put it down to it being Christmas day. Our 3 course meal for 3 people including 3 cocktails cost us £120. Cocktails were well worth the money and very strong!.

We had also reserved a table for the following evening and was interested to see the difference booking from the al a carte menu. A one man steel 'band' accompanied the meal which was pleasant. The food was good quality but not very good value. The cost of this meal was £60 for 2 courses each and a cocktail each.

Service? Indifferent. We did eventually manage to get a smile from the waitress but the bar staff completely ignored me and were not particularly friendly.

Wine was £30 a bottle so we stayed with cocktails. We personally would not eat here again. Overall rating :) :) (for quality of food)

WYSIWYG: In the UK we tend to rate the cleaniness of restaurant kitchens with the state of their loos. If the loos at WYSIWYG is anything to go by and had we visited them first then we probably would not have eaten there. However, we had two very good meals there but again not very good value. We came to the conclusion that eating out in Tobago was expensive. The staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful and we ended up drinking pre-diner cocktails in the bar which was comfortable and nice. We got chatting to one of the bar staff and learnt alot more about Rum after our visit.

A popular restaurant and their menu is due to become more extensive in January offering takeaway BBQ chicken, as they put it.... on the way back from Pigeon Point! :D :D :D

Pelican Reef: Did not like one bit. Worst service and most unfriendly place visited the whole week. Can't complain about the food. Value? not bad compared to other restaurants. Our meal was made worse by disruptive family with unruly children who were allowed to climb on the tables. We had one glass of house wine which was nearly undrinkable :D

Dillons: Lovely! served by a Gok Wan lookalikie.. very professional and very friendly. Our daughter had lobster which was delicious. Very good quality food. Not cheap but we didn't mind because it was a lovely atmosphere and good service. The wine was relatively good value at £17 a bottle and was tasty. Wished we decided to go there more. :D :D :D :D :D

Maradora's: We stumbled across this when driving around the island. Its built on stilts in the tree canopy along Bloody Bay Road. Well worth a visit. Run by twin sisters and their mother serving traditional Tobagan food. There is no menu, they just tell you what is available that day. My sort of restaurant as you know it is freshly cooked. Dave had goat curry. We had 'cuttles' which was BBQ chicken in a tasty sauce.
Nice loos! and very good value for money. Definitely recommend. With 3 soft drinks costs us just £20. They have a facebook site . email address is maradonas @yahoo.com. Defintely deserves 5 smiles! :D :D :D :D :D

Take Away: Don't know what it was called (on the corner of Crown Point and Pigeon Point Road and next to Pizza Boys. Very popular at all times of day. We decided to chance it to enomise one evening. Good choice of meat, salad and veg with chips, noodles, macaroni or mash. Nice for a change but don't expect a smile! My lamb was a bit tough but couldn't complain because it was very good value. :D :D

Bagos: We used this as a sun downer bar but we had a feeling some people had been there since sun up! Not particularly friendly staff but with 2 cocktails for $40TT who can complain. It was a good atmosphere and we joined the others in attempting in taking a few sunset pictures. A nice stop off after beach and before making our way back to apartment. :D :D

Colours: (winking, blinking and nod) We never ate there and by the looks of it nobody else did either. We walked past this every day and we often joked about how many people we would see in there each time.. no more than 4 were seen by us.

The Mermaid Hotel: This looked lovely from the outside and decided to have our final lunch there. Menu was not extensive but looked interesting and good value for money. We were the only ones eating there and the hotel looked quiet but they were expecting a plane full of people to arrive as it was change over day.

Tasty food and good value. We would have eaten there again had we stayed longer. Friendly and helpful staff. :D :D :D

Would recommend: Callou soup from (ironically) Pelican Reef and Dillons and WYSIWYG

Lobster at Dillons. Everything from Pancake Man. Goat Curry from Maradora's. Red Snapper at Dillons. Coctails at Bago's. Rum Punch at Bonkers!

Thanks for your report. We are going to Tobago this week so this info is very helpful. I was a bit shocked by the prices of the meals, I think we will be doing a lot of cooking this holiday.

Hi
Many get a bad surprise when they see that these restaurants aren´t that sheap as they supposed, but it´s Crown Point, mostly tourist a area, and as they pay the bill...

Try Cafe Coco, some believe it´s very expensive, but in fact, some meals are cheaper there compare with, as an example, Pelican Inn and other similars. Cafe Coco is a nice place, nice staff and you don´t have to order the most expensive choise.
