Does anyone know how the price of groceries on Tobago compares to the US? Do you have a pretty good selection? We are going to staying near Arnos Vale, where would you recommend we shop? Are there fruit stands and the such there? Thanks for any insight.

Hello Wanda,
From the Arnos Vale area you are about 15 minutes driving from both the Pennysaver in Carnbee and Moorshead Gourmet just off the Shirvan Road. They are about 5 minutes apart so you can shop at both stores on the same trip.
As for pricing, many items are cheaper and others are more expensive because they are imported. It will end up being about the same as at home. There are many fruit and veggie stands all over the island but you will do well at the two in the Pennysaver (Carnbee) parking lot. You will also find some in Plymouth that you might be able to walk to. You can get a decent roti and basic supplies in Plymouth too. I'm not sure if the gas station in Plymouth is operational at this time.

Re: grocery prices in Tobago
Wanda,
the number of groceries with a good variety of goods is limited.
PENNYSAVERs (Carnbee and Bon Accord) and J.T. Morshead (Mt. Pleasant) are grocery importers and retailers and provide a reasonable variety of local and imported goods.
Some other stores in more remote areas usually cater more for local demand.
At the above mentioned groceries you will find a good variety of imported US-american items, like
pre-cooked frozen foods, cereals, meats, juices, dairy products etc.
Those items may be a bit more expensive than in your country, because they have to come down here.
Fruits and vegetables are available islandwide depending on the season. Most of the products come
from or through Trinidad, as agriculture is operated in Tobago only on a very small scale.
In December / January (i remember reading you are planning to come down around that time) you
will find a good variety of citrus fruits, some of them you may not have tasted yet
Imported vegetables are available in some bigger vegetable/fruit stores in Bon Accord. I personally try to avoid them, they tend to be overpriced.
If you are open to learn about cooking local food, get the Naparima Girls High School Cooking Book upon your arrival in a book store. This is THE standard cooking guide of Trinidad and Tobago.
It will guide you to cooking delicious meals with vegetables in season available everywhere.
