Camping in Tobago

Postby Keolian » Thu Feb 12, 2009 7:41 pm

Hi All,

This is my first time posting on this site -- what a great abundance of information, great job! I paid my first visit to Tobago last March, but only stayed for two nights (!). What a mistake that was to stay for such a short time, but it was one of the most authentic experiences I've ever had. I've decided to return for 10 days next month to continue discovering what I've uncovered last year.

What I would like to know is if there are any spots to setup camp for a night to sleep under the stars, preferably on a beach. I'm not looking for a campsite with facilities, just a quiet isolated spot where me and my companion won't be bothered. Can we setup camp anywhere on the island? Has anybody done this before? Any concerns on safety?

Thanks!
Keolian

Hello Keolian

Welcome aboard! :)

I'm not sure that just camping on the beach would be a great idea if you are new to the island. I would strongly recommend contacting the lovely Fabrizio 'Fab' Ceppi of Tobago Now (http://www.tobagonow.com) who runs various 'adventure' type excursions, including the truly great off-road adventure safaris. I'm pretty sure that he offer camping trips and going with him, you could be assured of adequate levels of safety and comfort, etc.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the information. You have no idea how much time I've been spending on your site :)

I think I'm going to scrap the idea of camping. The motivation was to increase the adventure component of my trip and to do so, I will rent a motorbike and ride my way around for 10 days. Since there doesn't seem to be much of accomodations along the southern coast, I plan on dividing my stay between Top River Pearl in Charlotteville and Lillibets in Castara. Is this a common plan shared by other travelers? Riding seemed quite safe the last time I did it for two days, but it wasn't during a downpour.

Any chance you might be on the island next month? Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

I think you've made a good choice, Keolian. The 'wet' season seems to have hung on a bit this year, but I'm sure by next month Tobago will be into full 'dry season' weather.

Sadly, due to family health issues, we are currently unable to make any travel plans, although hope to get a few weeks down there in the summer.

Sleeping on the beach has it's pitfalls in the form of the sandfly! You don't see'em but you do feel'em!

Take it easy on a bike when it is wet and please wear sensible shoes. I keep seeing guys riding by wearing flipflops and shorts. You dont do it here so why do it on Tobago,
Think Bike! Headlamp on and use your horn (politely) as nobody will take offence.
Stay back as few will be looking out for you in their rear view mirror and everyone will pull out or pull over without warning! Indicators, err what? Just take care.
