We would like to record our thoughts with others after staying at Castara Retreats. We were there for only a week from 3rd March 2010. Far too short a time, in Hummingbird 2. The apartment met all our expectations of a Caribbean island, all the staff were great, the birds were very tame, so keep feeding them! The view of the bay from the bed in the morning was just magic. If you want to chill out this the best place in the world.

Location : brilliant, Castara is by far and away the best location on Tobago, we looked at about half a dozen places to stay before choosing Castara. We made a point of “casing the other joints” whist we were there, and at the end of the day, we were convinced we made the right decision.

Castara is very laid back, the locals were delightful and always ready for a chat. The whole island is very clean (almost no litter), little traffic, the roads had less pot holes than here in the UK (Feb/March 2010). The beach is out of this world and again very clean, it appears to be raked every day and there were very few people on it. Watching the sting rays from the balcony was an experience not to forget. The snorkelling at the far end of the beach was excellent, and every time we went there we saw different fish, just like an aquarium, and coming face to face with a sting ray! Even the fish were friendly! The fresh fish from the market was reasonable, BUT do not stand and watch them cleaning the fish, they don’t like it, and told me so.

The rest of the island : Great up the north end, and the rain forest road, Englishman’s bay was great to look at but was rough the day we went and difficult to get into the water. Argyle falls, were just about worth a visit, we went in the dry season, and we both achieved 60 mosquito bites each, in less than an hour. In the apartment we only got a few the whole time were there. Do take a glass bottom boat from Speyside and the hike up Little Tobago, saw sea bird chicks in nest only 3ft away, forgotten name, but red bill.?

Would we go again? YES!
