Guest houses in Speyside and Charlotteville

Something strange happens in this part of Tobago: how can I get a room when there are plenty of guest houses?
We found several guest houses in these villages, but it was hard to find somebody with a key to let you in. Most guest houses do not have a caretaker on the premises. The caretaker goes home between 3 and 5 pm, and that's it. You're out of luck. If you want to come to this wonderful part of Tobago, be sure to come early in the afternoon to find a room!

We first stayed 2 days in Speyside in the Country Haven guest house. This little guest house is situated higher up the hill and has only 3 rooms. 2 Of those are rented out to locals, but the biggest one seems to be free for tourists (US$30). Nice room, with a little balcony overlooking the jungle and the bay.
Tip: check if there is water in the bathroom. Houses higher up the hills may have water problems in the dry season. The first night we had no water, but (lucky us) it rained later that night.

After an afternoon visit to Charlotteville we decide to immediately move to this village the next day. It is a far more pleasant village than Speyside.

Again, after looking for a caretaker in several places, we finally settled down in the wonderful Cholson Chalets. They have several rooms in 2 buildings, all self contained. Prices vary between US$33 and US$66 (low season). Call 639 8553 for reservations.
