Hmmm!
I see the problem. In view of your comments, this is a thread that could escalate, so before this happens, may I please assure readers that hotels and guesthouses on Tobago do NOT normally discriminate - after all, until recently (and possibly even now) they receive more annual holidaymakers from Trinidad than from overseas.
Please don't take offence at the following remarks, Lou. I'm sure your boyfriend is a really nice guy to whom these comments do not apply. However, I would hate for your post to give the wrong impression about the island and the explanation is, unfortunately, likely to embarass.
Because of its fundamental safey, Tobago has always been popular with ladies from Europe and other places who visit the island and find romance. Many of these relationships are very genuine, deep and long-lasting, but equally some of the men that ply themselves on the beaches and bars have little integrity and dishonourable intent. There have been more than a few cases where the men's main aim is to be taken back to the ladies accommodation to 'case the joint'. A few days/weeks later, the place gets burgled. This is why we strongly advise everyone not to take 'locals' back to their accommodation in our Personal Safety article. It is why Lou is finding a problem.
I'm sorry Lou, but I can say little more. The best thing is for your boyfriend to visit accommodation you like and meet the owners. I have always found everyone on Tobago to be wonderfully hospitable and understanding. I hate to say it, but if they meet him and take a stand, maybe you should read between the lines.
I really apologise if my comments upset you, because that is certainly not my intention. Sadly, I see no way that I can ignore your question as it seems to be in direct response to my reply, so I'm well and truly caught. I can only answer honestly.
