Fly fishing(and some surgery ;-)) for 5 weeks

hey there....

I am a medical student from austria and I am going to Bago in Febuary 2010 and stay for 5 weeks to do my clinical intership in surgery. Well this is what i tell my girlfriend... :P mostly I chose tobago for the chance of some good fishing though febuary isn´t the best month what I´ve heard.

So I am wondering where I should stay during those 5 weeks to have a perfekt base to go fly fishing and beeing not too far away from scarborough regional hospital. What do you Bago specialist think of Bacolet?? I have an offer at Ann Roberts Guesthouse which is at the same beach as the Blue Heaven hotel.
I want to fishing every morning and the rest of the day when I come back from hospital!

I would be happy if you have some input for me!

Cheers Greg

Hi Greg

I just wanted to welcome you aboard - I will leave our more expert readers to comment with regard to fishing. :D

I assume you will have a car during your stay? Pretty essential in Tobago. Other than that, remember that Tobago is a very small island. Bacolet will be ideally placed for the hospital, but I don't imagine the fishing is ideal in that area of coast. However, if you've got a car, all the likely spots will be within a 20-minute drive.

Hi Greg

February can be a good month and I may be out in Feb 2010 myself, although I will be trying to avoid fishing plus some surgery during the trip this time around

I don't know if you have sorted out your accommodation yet - Bacolet has some good fishing around the rocks either side of the bay, but flyfishing is difficult here, mainly because of the cliffs at your back and the waves are much bigger here, without the protection of the reefs.

The shallow (flats) areas start at Labeau and on down past Canoe Bay to Crown Point and then on to Pigeon Point and Bon Accord lagoon.

Have fun

Steve

bought your DVD (Fishing the Carribean) which is really cool and has some really good tips!!!

still think i will stay at bacolet allthough fly fishing isn't the best there but i have to get to Scarborough Hospital every day and as i don't have a car i get there by the houseowner!

where do you guys base when at bago?

I will be there from 20th January until 3rd of March 2010....would be great to meet up there for at least some Carib!!

Hi Greg,

I'm gonna be there from the 21st of January and if you like we could get together for some fishing. Is it only fly fishing you're into or interested in all sorta fishing?

hey Robert...

Yeah would be cool to do some fishing together!! Well mainly I am a Fly Fisherman but on special occasions(hell lot of wind, to lazy to strip line all day long) I grab a spinning rod or something like that!

Send me a PM with your data like the hotel you are staying and well get in contact then!

tight lines Greg!

Hi Greg,

That sounds sorted then. I've done a lot of fishing around Tobago alone ( unfortunately my girlfriend isn't up for it that often) so it's gonna be great to have somebody along. Sadly I don't actually know how to use the PM facility through Mytobago so I take the chance to share some vague info here. We'll be staying in the Bacolet area also ( could be only a few minute drive from one another) so picking you up for a ride shouldn't be a problem at all.

I strongly suggest that you bring your spinning gear too as it can be very productive. Most of the beaches are just a short drive apart so it is easy to move around if some of them happen to be devoid of fish.

I'll Pm you with all the info once I've figured out the way to do it.

hey robert,

Looking forward meeting you there. Since you are ariving on the 21st what plane are you taking cause I am still not sure which way to take. From austria the direct flights are pretty limited so my options would be Frankfurt/Germany which is quite expensive or Gatwick with BA!?

Hi Greg,

I guess the best (cheapest if you're on a tight budget) option for you would be to fly from Vienna to London (return would cost you approx 100£ or Euros) and then get a flight from Gatwick to Tobago with Monarch. If money isn't that big a concern you can go for a flight with either Virgin or BA. Anyway if you can get a good deal with Virgin then it'd cost you only 30-40 pounds more than a flight with Monarch. Needless to say that the service provided by Virgin is much superior. On top of that Virgin flies direct so the flight duration is a few hours shorter. Never took a flight with BA to Tobago so the only thing I know is , as Monarch they don't offer a direct trip.

Robert,

Thanks for your help! The Problem with monarch is that they do not offer that period of time! You can only book flights in a 2 week period but I may be wrong! The other thing is the luggage for 6 weeks. Most likely i do have a extra luggage for Fishing stuff and this is expensive! How do you transport your fishing equipment?

Cheers Greg

Hi Greg,

I'm sure it shouldn't be a problem to book flights for a longer period with any of the above mentioned airlines.

As for the fishing gear, I'll take four travel rods, (2 spinning rods, 1 fly rod and a boat rod) they're all packed in hardshell travel tubes which easily fit into our suitcases. 2 tubes in each. No matter where I fly I always take my reels onboard in my handbaggage as they're much more prone to damage. The rest of the gear, terminal tackle etc are also put into the suitcases. Dont forget you're going to the West Indies so all you need is some 'shorts and shirts' therefore you got plenty of space for your tackle. ( guess, even if you go for 6 weeks you won't need a lot of clothes as you'll have to do your laundry anyway. First time we took so much unnecessary stuff that it was almost ridiculous)If your rods dont fit into your suitcase the airline should take care of them free providing they dont exceed your baggage/weight allowance when added together. As far as I know.

Hope this helps

Robert
