Details of essential medical and health care facilities on Tobago
There are currently no compulsory vaccination requirements for entry to Trinidad & Tobago. However, in common with travel to all tropical countries, vaccinations against Hepatitis A and Yellow Fever are recommended and you should be revaccinated against Tetanus-Diptheria every 10 years.
Vaccination against Hepatitis B is STRONGLY recommended if you envisage intimate contact with a local while on Trinidad or Tobago. The islands have been declared rabies-free, so vaccination is no longer necessary.
Tobago medical facilities are more limited than we are used to in Europe and North America - but not the care given. A visitor we met spent some days in the hospital after a heart attack. He reported that the care was first class, but the building left an awful lot to be desired.
A new Tobago Regional Hospital is being built just north of the Claude Noel Highwa, opposite Lambeau. This will replace the old building which is located next to Fort King George, between Scarborough town centre and Bacolet. The hospital can be contacted on 631-2551/2552.
All complex medical cases are transferred to Trinidad, where excellent State and private medical facilities exist. Ambulance services on Tobago are limited, with an ambulance service depot at Scarborough servicing the south and centre of the island and a depot at Roxborough servicing the north of the island.
It is very important that all visitors ensure that they have adequate medical insurance. Check to ensure that this includes the possible cost of medical evacuation to your home country.
The water on Tobago is safe to drink, but visitors accustomed to over-packaged and sanitised products should stick to bottled water. As anywhere in the world, those with slightly sensitive stomachs or immune systems may find a degree of sensitivity if they drink to much of the 'different' water over the first few days.
Visitors often suffer from an infection known as swimmer's ear due to constant immersion in sea water. Details and tips on how to avoid or treat this condition are given in our swimming article.
Another common problem, particularly during the wet months, are bites and irritations caused by mosquitoes, sand flies and other small insects. Full details are given in our insects article.
Your hotel will obviously be in the best position to tell you about local doctors, pharmacies and other health facilities. Visitors staying up-country should note that there are NO pharmacies or doctors based outside the populated south-west of the island shown on the following map:
