Blue Mango Cottages - Review Page 4
Clay Kitchen Restaurant
The Blue Mango’s restaurant, the Clay Kitchen, is operated by Colin’s partner, Rebecca. It has been closed, undergoing major refurbishment and enlargement, for some time. The work was almost complete at the time of our visit and a ‘grand opening’ took place the night following our departure. No jokes please!
Rebecca opened for a ‘curry evening’ one evening during our stay. The local speciality, Crab and Dumpling, is not normally one of our favourite dishes, but the curry sauce accompanying Rebecca’s version made it one of the tastiest dishes we have enjoyed in a long time. In fairness, we have always been suckers for a ‘proper’ curry.
Rebecca’s cooking has a good reputation and we wish her well with the new venture. Castara desperately needs good dining places. We understand that entertainment, in the form of ‘back in times’ favourites, is now being provided one evening per week.
Conclusion
The Blue Mango Cottages will not suit everyone. Neither will Castara, nor any other guest house or rental property in the village. NO holiday accommodation is right for everyone.
Are you seeking a degree of seclusion? Would you like to gently swing in a hammock under a clear starry sky, looking out over a silvery moonlit sea? Do you indulge in fantasies of being washed upon a desert island and constructing a rough shelter? If your answer is ‘yes’, then you will probably adore this place.
The Blue Mango website uses the slogan "Three simple, simply beautiful seaside cottages". This, frankly, says it all. The accommodation is simple; the location stunning. If you are looking for gold-plated taps and matching fluffy bathrobes, then the Blue Mango and Castara are not for you.
Our stay in Sea Steps will remain a fond memory for many years. The cottage is quirky and somewhat ‘bohemian’. The fact that we enjoyed it may say more about ourselves than the cottage. Whatever the truth, it was a memorable experience.
