Hidden Cottage - Review Page 4
Hummingbird Apartment
The Hummingbird studio apartment offers comfotable holiday accommodation for two people. The apartment has a gross internal area of 29sq.m. plus a lovely covered front deck providing a further 13sq.m.
The apartment is self-contained and equipped with a new four-burner gas stove (no grill), toaster and electric kettle. There is a small fridge with an ice-making compartment, but no proper freezer. This is a disappointing oversight. Without the ability to store frozen goods, guests are limited in what they can cook. I understand that there are plans to install a larger fridge in the future.
In similar vein, although the apartment is only intended to accommodate two people, a more generous stock of kitchen utensils, cutlery, crockery and glassware would be a major improvement. Having said that, everything supplied was new-looking and in immaculate condition. We understand that additionaly cutlery, glassware and utensils have been added since our visit.
There is a small but comfortable indoor seating area with satellite television. The bedroom area is furnished with a double bed with mosquito net and a small wardrobe offering 0.5m of full-length hanging space and two drawers. There are no bedside tables and just a single bedside lamp.
The bathroom is small, but perfectly functional and has both hot and cold water. It also has an attractive semi-circular shower unit, identical to the one in the master bedroom in Mot Mot.
Hummingbird Apartment has air-conditioning, of the type described for the larger apartment. Because it is on the upper floor, security is not the same issue and so guests who (like me) dislike air-conditioning will be able to leave the windows open and take advantage of the night breezes.
Like the lower apartment, Hummingbird is wired for both local 110v and 220v power.
The front of the cottage (this is what Hummingbird Apartment resembles) is dominated by a lovely 5 x 2.6m balcony. The balcony is furnished with a hammock, two very comfortable padded armchairs chairs, four all-weather chairs and a small table. This is such a lovely spot that it will inevitably be where most guests relax and dine.
At the time of our visit, the very small table on the balcony severely restricted dining comfort. However, since our visit a much larger table has been installed. In addition, a small table with sun umbrella and pair of chairs have been installed just outside the covered balcony.
Conclusion
Hidden Cottage is unique in that as far as I know, it is the only self-catering apartment in the Castara region able to provide accommodation for up ten people. It is centrally located in a superbly
private spot and yet just a couple of minutes walk from the main beach.
The apartments are spacious and well-equipped, although furnishings are modest. A few lapses in attention to detail are the only thing that separates this charming property from larger more luxurious properties charging very considerably more.
Without question of doubt, both apartments at Hidden Cottage are deserving of a myTobago recommendation and would make a wonderful holiday home in Castara.
