Lord's Villa- Review Page 1

Mahi Mahi Suite frontageLord’s Villa is a three-bedroom holiday villa located on the popular Bon Accord Development, a short five-minute drive from Tobago’s A.N.R.Robinson International Airport.

The property features three en suite bedrooms plus a ‘television nook’ with fold-down divan. The villa is ideally suited to a family of six adults and a child or two. Additional features include a decent-sized swimming pool and a relatively small, but mature, garden with excellent privacy from neighbouring villas. The house is situated no more than a five minute walk from the start of the Pigeon Point peninsula.

Location

The Bon Accord Development is situated just below the southern end of the mangrove wetlands that fringe Bon Accord Lagoon, between the Pigeon Point peninsula and Buccoo. Over the past 12 years or so, around 50 acres (20 hectares) of brush land and mangrove have been drained and cleared and some 100 mid-market villas built on the development. Many undeveloped plots remain, but the pace of life and work on Tobago is so slow that construction noise is seldom an issue.

Most of the houses are holiday homes and/or holiday rental properties. A few are the homes of local professionals and business owners. The villas are more impressive than the roads connecting them. Nevertheless, the development has a fairly upscale feel and an air of quiet calm prevails.

Rear aspect of Mahi Mahi SuiteLord’s is within reasonable walking distance of a number of beaches, restaurants, mini-marts and small shops. However, as in all our reviews, we must stress that your own transport is recommended if you are to get the best out of Tobago and particularly if you are travelling with young children. Walking in the heat of the sun is no joy when carrying bags of groceries or with impatient toddlers by your side. Why make your holiday hard work?

The villa backs onto an area of dense bush, little more than 330m from the white sands of Pigeon Point. Whilst a locked gate does give access from the rear of the property, it would be a brave man who would attempt to fight their way through the dense bush and take advantage of the shortcut. Fortunately there is an easier, well-lit and secure walk of less than half a mile.

The south-western coral-bed ‘lowlands’ of Tobago may not be the island’s most beautiful area, but they are undoubtedly the most popular in terms of general facilities and as a base from which to explore the island. If you have transport, every good restaurant is within a ten-minute drive of Lord’s Villa. The island’s biggest supermarket is just a three or four minute drive; a variety of beautiful Caribbean beaches within fifteen; and both golf courses less than 10 minutes. You are ideally located to experience and tour every part of this beautiful island.

Architecture

Lord’s Villa is a two-storey house of decided Spanish style. High ceilings and uneven rendering of both internal and external walls, with colourful wooden window shutters, enhance the Mediterranean feel – and the style feels entirely appropriate for the Caribbean.

View of the pool and gardensLord’s is one of the so-called Coral Sea Villas. The development was originally dominated by four or five fairly standard villa designs, largely identical and varying only in terms of external render and trim colours. The Coral Seas style was one of the more popular and larger designs. There are at least a dozen similar villas but most are grouped together at the other end of the estate and Lord’s Villa stands fairly unique amongst its neighbours.

A 2.5m wall separates the rear of the property from the fairly impenetrable bush behind. A simple mesh fence separates the house from the two neighbouring properties, but a lush and mature border of small palms and disparate tropical ornamental trees and bushes ensure that each villa maintain an acceptable balance of privacy. Whilst strictly against the law in Trinidad and Tobago, topless sunbathing or swimming should not be an issue at Lord’s.

A single five-inch step leads up to the covered portico at the front door. Although no wheelchair ramps or other mobility aids are available, the ground floor or the villa is completely level and there is a downstairs bedroom and bathroom. Therefore the property could be suited to those with physical impairment or wheelchair-bound.
