Mahogany Villa - Review Page 1

Mahogany Villa is a very spacious three-bedroom holiday rental villa located on the small but prestigious Villas On The Green development overlooking Tobago’s Mount Irvine golf course.
The five villas on the development are based on the same floor plan, so are fundamentally identical, other than for minor layout and size differences. However, being privately owned, each is furnished and decorated to the owner’s taste and budget and so can offer a totally different ambience.
One of these villas, Petit Careme, has been recommended by myTobago for seven years. Whilst there are many beautiful vacation villas available, it can be something of a lottery finding those that are managed well enough to equal the advertising boasts. As evidenced by the high RSR (Reader Satisfaction Rating) and positive reader reports, the properties recommended by myTobago tend to get booked more rapidly than others. So, given the popularity of the secure Villas on the Green development, it became clear that a second choice would be desirable.
Mahogany is a sister villa to Hawksbill House, Sandpebbles Villa and Yellowbird Villa, owned and run by retired British racing driver, Peter Westbury, and his wife Jenny. Our decision to include Mahogany was largely based on the excellent service that we know their team provides.
The Villas On The Green development is situated on the lower slopes of Mount Irvine and boasts some 85 metres of frontage, and direct access, onto the Mount Irvine golf course. The villas are spaced out over the two acre site around a central shared swimming pool. Mahogany Villa is located to the front of the development, directly bordering and overlooking the 11th green of the golf course.
The development is a short 15-20 minute drive from the airport. Mount Irvine represents a truly excellent balance in location terms. It is just a short hop from the essential shops, restaurants and facilities of the Crown Point area, which is a bit of an unattractive built-up sprawl. It is often said that Tobago comprises of the Lowlands and the Nicelands. Mount Irvine marks the start of the latter.
The Shirvan Road, which runs along this section of the Caribbean north coast road, has become Tobago’s dominant restaurant strip in recent years. More than half dozen of Tobago’s most popular restaurants are housed along, or adjacent to, this mile or two of coast road. Mahogany Villa is effectively in the middle of this strip.
Whilst Grange Beach is just a pleasant 10-minute walk across the golf course and Mount Irvine Bay beach about five minutes more, there are no shops or restaurants within walking distance of Mahogany Villa. So, as we say in almost every review, it is essential to have your own transport. Relying on taxis is possible, but is normally inconvenient and time-wasting and can ultimately be more expensive than hiring a self-drive vehicle.
Completed in 1997, Mahogany Villa is of virtually identical architectural style to the other five houses on the Villas On The Green development. They are essentially modern, two-storey semi-Colonial style villas. Their distinctive red pan tiled roofs can be seen across the golf course, from the Shirvan Road. The rendered walls of the buildings are finished in a pleasant ivory colour, but the reflections from the roof tiles often make the walls look pink in strong sunlight.
The two acres of land on which the villas are built are a lush riot of colour. You can see virtually nothing of the development as you arrive. However, once through the electronic gates the first impression is one of colour – not least the beautiful bougainvillea, numerous palm trees and then the striking images of the villas themselves. Skilful landscaping generates an overall ambience of lush greenery. From no single point do you have a clear view of the entire development.
Two shallow steps lead from the driveway to the front door of Mahogany Villa. No wheelchair ramps are provided or mobility aids fitted. However, the master bedroom is located on the ground floor and the house is so spacious and uncluttered that it could be a viable choice for wheelchair users or visitors with mobility issues.
