Mahogany Villa - Review Page 4
Security is an increasing issue for villa owners on Tobago. There has been an increase in crime on the island in recent years, but incidents are still infrequent and security is hardly more of a problem on Tobago than in most of the world. Herein lays the problem: so many visitors – particularly those from the sister-island, Trinidad – are used to living in high-security, gated communities that they feel exposed if they go on holiday and stay in a property less protected than they are used to at home, regardless of local conditions.
Travellers who feel this way are attracted to Villas On The Green because the development is protected by high, but relatively discrete, security fences and the main entrance is protected by a remotely controlled gate, with intercom communication and control from each villa. A security guard is on duty on the compound during the hours of darkness.
Mahogany Villa itself has security bars on all windows and doors and a full electronic security system. A small security box is provided for valuables.
Grange Beach is little more than a 600m, 10-minute walk across the golf course. This lovely sandy beach is almost invariably deserted, possibly because the surf tends to run fairly high here, making it something of a challenge for all but the stronger swimmers and surfers. However, lovely Mount Irvine beach is no more than a 1km 15-minute walk from the villa and offers excellent swimming. This beach has the added advantage of the Mt.Irvine Bay Hotel beach bar facilities.
All the popular Caribbean coast beaches, including Buccoo, Grafton beach (Stonehaven Bay) and Turtle Beach (Great Courland Bay), are within a 5-10 minute drive of the villa. The popular, but often crowded, beaches of Pigeon Point and Store Bay are no more than 20-minutes away.
Dining & Shopping
Although none are within realistic walking distance, every major restaurant, supermarket, pharmacy and shop in the south-western end of the island is within a 15 minute drive of Mahogany Villa.
The nearest supermarket, Moorshead’s Gourmet Foods at Mount Pleasant, is little more than a 5-minute drive away. This up-market (by Tobago standards) supermarket has a good range of imported goods. However, the larger and cheaper Penny Savers supermarkets at Canaan or Carnbee have increased their range of international products in recent years and both branches are within a 10-minute drive of Mahogany Villa. The smaller of the two Penny Savers supermarkets, at Carnbee, is a little closer and has the added advantage of a useful (and helpful) pharmacy, and two fruit and vegetable stalls, immediately adjacent.
The nearest restaurant is the Mot Mot Restaurant, just a short 5-minute drive away from the villa. This small local restaurant has a very pleasant ambience, reasonable prices and tasty food. At least half a dozen of the island’s most popular restaurants are within a 10-minute drive, including the very popular Fish Pot at Pleasant Prospect, the Seahorse Inn on Grafton beach, the Pavillion Restaurant at Stonehaven Villas, La Tartaruga and El Pescador at Buccoo, plus a small collection of less reliable restaurants, such as Patino’s, Me-Shells, Melange, and the Shirvan Watermill. Please see our Restaurant listings for Region 2 and don’t forget to check their RSR (Reader Satisfaction Ratings) to see how other visitors have rated them.
The fact that we have reviewed and recommended two near-identical villas on the same development surely says it all.
The location of Villas On The Green is so ideal that you simply never think twice about ‘popping out’ for something you need – assuming you have your own transport, of course. However, despite being so close to all the facilities, you are nestled in a hugely tranquil fold in the hills at the base of Mount Irvine in a location that has all the attributes of a much more isolated spot. There is no road noise. Nor is there any of the usual cacophony of Caribbean village life.
Mahogany Villa undoubtedly offers wonderful holiday accommodation for parties of up to six or eight adults. The house is spacious, well-furnished and very, very comfortable. What more can one ask?
