Naturalist Beach Resort - Review Page 1

Reviewed by Steve & Jill Wooler in February 2008

Castara is a quiet, working, fishing village. It has two lovely beaches. Both offer excellent swimming and snorkelling opportunities. Apart from its beauty, the bay is noted for the family of friendly rays that regularly patrol the waterfront. Totally harmless to swimmers, they are a wonderful sight, especially when viewed from the higher ground around the bay.

The Naturalist Beach Resort is a small self-catering establishment owned and managed by Castarian, Ancle George. Ancle is well-known in the north-coast area, due to his community work and annual Children's Extravaganza – a popular and boisterous Christmas party for local children.

Location

The Naturalist Beach Resort is located on the larger of Castara’s two main beaches. The property is easy to find and is signposted from the main north coast road, where a steep and narrow pitted road leads down to the property, café and car park.

The entire village is within easy walking distance. Whilst a self-drive rental car would enhance your stay, transport is not essential. Touring the island could not be easier and is thoroughly recommended. So, drag yourself off your beach chair, hire a car or 4x4 from Ancle’s Naturalist Rentals fleet and experience everything that Tobago has to offer.

Castara is a 50-minute drive from the airport. Shopping opportunities are limited, to say the least, so it is important to stock up at one of Tobago’s main supermarkets before leaving the more populated end of the island. It is therefore probably best to arrange to be met by Ancle at the airport. This will ensure a warm ‘meet and greet’ and comfortable transport to the Naturalist.

Accommodation

The Naturalist Beach Resort offers a total of six modest self-contained studio apartments.Four of the apartments are family units with folding divans supplementing the standard double beds. The other two apartments are smaller and suitable for single or double occupancy.

The apartments are housed in two separate buildings. The Blue Marlin Suite, the main subject of this review, is located on the upper floor of Café Delight. The other four apartments are housed within the adjacent original house, directly beside the beach.

Full details of the accommodations will be provided over the following pages.
