Accommodation

The main verandah at Petit Careme Villa

Petit Careme Villa has three air-conditioned bedrooms, each with an en suite bathroom. There is also the separate air-conditioned self-contained one-bedroom apartment on the lower ground floor. The total floor area of the main house is 287sq.m. (3,090sq.ft.) and the apartment a further 112sq.m. (1,200 sq.ft.).

The villa is beautifully furnished and decorated throughout, with walls painted in pleasant pastel colours and nice cool tiles on all floors. The dominant theme is the sea. Owner Rawle Barrow is a serious sailor and the walls are decorated with posters and pictures related to his sport, plus a variety of other very nice examples of Caribbean art. The most interesting part of the décor is the stunning displays of seashells and coral. The property is registered with the Tobago House of Assembly Tourism Department and, as such, regularly inspected to ensure that fire extinguishers and smoke alarms are fitted throughout the house and apartment and maintained correctly.

Bedroom 1

The master bedroomThe master bedroom is located on the ground floor of the villa. Offering a total of 34.2sq.m. of floor space (including the bathroom) and a maximum length of 9.2m, the bedroom can only be described as massive. Like every other room, it is nicely decorated and furnished and everything was in good maintenance and decorative order.

This bedroom is furnished with a very comfortable king-size bed, two single-drawer bedside tables, each with a reading lamp, a 4-drawer dressing table with half-length mirror, two suitcase racks and 1.25m of full-length wardrobe space with a good stock of clothes hangers. The room also has a 3-drawer desk and chair and a cot. There is an extension from the villa’s direct-dial telephone and an electric mosquito deterrent.

The property is fully air-conditioned. This includes the living room/kitchen and all three bedrooms (and the apartment). One of the few criticisms raised in our last review was that the bedroom air-conditioners were somewhat noisier than we would have liked. I am delighted to report that since that stay in 2005 all the bedroom units have been replaced with genuinely whisper-quiet units from top manufacturer Mitsubishi. Nobody could complain now. They were as quiet and efficient as any I have come across, anywhere.

Master bedroom bathroomThe en suite bathroom is a spacious 2.8x2.3m and boasts the only bidet I have seen on Tobago (to the best of my recollection). The washbasin is inset into a cabinet with three drawers and a cupboard, with adequate space for our toiletries. An electric hairdryer is provided, and can be shared between rooms. The shaver socket was hardly required by your bearded author, but was useful for charging our electric toothbrush. The nicely-tiled walk-in shower was in lovely condition. Water pressure was adequate and there was always a good supply of hot water.

Towels and linen are of excellent quality, with linen changes every three days, or as required, and towels daily. Beach towels are also provided.

Bedroom 2

Bedrooms 2 is located on the upper floor and is furnished and decorated to the same high and attractive standard as the rest of the villa. It offers a total of 25sq.m. of space. Despite being furnished with two 4´6˝ double beds the room appears spacious and also light and bright. Additional furnishings include bedside tables and lamps, a suitcase rack and a wooden clothes rack. The wardrobe offers 1.7m of full-length hanging space and shelving.

Bedroom 2 on the upper floorThis bedroom has windows on one wall and glazed doors leading onto a common narrow balcony along the front of the building. The balcony is too small to sit on, but if you prefer to sleep without the air-conditioner, you can leave the balcony doors open and use the ceiling fan and provided electric mosquito deterrent. Mosquitoes and insects were almost conspicuous by their absence during our stay, which came as a bit of a surprise given the dense foliage around the villa.

At 2.5x1.5m, the en suite bathroom is of little more than reasonable size, but nevertheless well fitted, practical and attractive. The washbasin is set into an attractive vanity unit with six drawers plus an under-sink cupboard, so there is lots of storage space. There is a 110v electric shaver socket and a fully-tiled walk-in shower unit, but no bidet as in the master room.

Bedroom 3

Bedroom 3 at Petit Careme VillaThis is the smallest of the three bedrooms, measuring 4.3x3.5m and offering 20.5sq.m. of total floor space. However, it is still quite spacious and doesn’t look crammed despite being furnished with a queen-size bed, two bedside tables and lamps, a pair of luggage racks and a towel/clothes rack. It is an attractive, light and airy room with glazed doors leading onto the small balcony and windows on the side wall.

An interesting feature of this room is door to the en suite bathroom which is contained behind a false wardrobe door. Like the other rooms, the bathroom is attractively tiled and all bathrooms fittings are in good condition, with little of the disfiguring corrosion so common in the tropics. The washbasin vanity unit has four drawers plus an under-sink cupboard. There is a shaver socket beside the washbasin and fully-tiled walk-in shower.
