Petit Careme - Review Page 5

Staff

Petit Careme Villa is managed by a lovely housekeeper, Charmaine, who services the apartment six days per week (every day except Sundays). Virtually every report in the villa’s guest book sings her praises and I’m not surprised.

Mount Irvine 'hotel' beachInitially shy and quiet, Charmaine has a great sense of humour and is a wonderful source of information. She is also a terrific cook and you can make private arrangements with her to cook meals for your party, or do laundry. Other commitments meant that we only had the opportunity to test her skills once, but that example certainly endorsed what we had been told. We simply discussed a menu with her the day before the meal, purchased the necessary ingredients and then left her to it.

The Villas On The Green development is managed centrally as far as gardeners and pool maintenance is concerned. All staff were friendly and unobtrusive and kept the grounds and pool in excellent condition.

Beaches

Grange Beach is little more than a ten-minute walk across the golf course. Lovely little Mt.Irvine Bay Beach is just a few minutes further and has the advantage of shade, better bathing and the facilities of the new Mt.Irvine Bay Hotel beach bar and restaurant.

If walking doesn’t take your fancy, there are many other beaches, such as Buccoo beach, Back Bay and Grafton beach, within little more than a five minute drive of the villa.

Dining & Shopping

A MotMot visitor to Petit CaremeThere are no shops, restaurant or bars within easy walking distance of Petit Careme Villa. However, every major restaurant, supermarket, pharmacy and shop is within a 15 minute drive.

The nearest supermarket, Moorshead’s Gourmet Foods at Mount Pleasant, is a 5-minute drive away. This up-market (by Tobago standards) supermarket has a good range of imported goods. There is an useful fruit and vegetable store, Grange Farm Mini Mart, on the main road, just before the turn-off to Moorshead. The larger and cheaper Penny Savers supermarkets at Canaan or Carnbee are both within a 10-minute drive and have the additional advantage of pharmacies immediately adjacent.

The Mot Mot Restaurant is the nearest restaurant, just five minutes away. Other restaurants within easy access include La Tartaruga, Patino’s, Ru-B-Lou’s, Me-Shells, Melange, Shirvan Watermill, The Fish Pot, The Pavillion (Stonehaven Villas) and the Seahorse Inn.

Security

Security has become of more concern to villa owners on Tobago in recent years, but incidents are still infrequent and Tobago is far safer than most tourists could claim their home community to be. Herein lays the problem: so many visitors are used to living in high-security, gated communities that they feel exposed if they go on holiday and stay in less protected property.

Travellers who feel this way should be well satisfied by Villas On The Green. The community is protected by high, but well concealed, security fences and the entrance guarded by tall electronically-operated gates with intercom communication and control from each villa. A security guard patrols the grounds at night.

Petit Careme Villa itself has security bars on all windows and doors and a full electronic security system. There is also a key-operated security safe for valuables.

Conclusion

Our original 2005 review of Petit Careme concluded as follows:

Petit Careme at Tobago Villas On The GreenOur five days at Petit Careme Villa passed all too quickly. This is undoubtedly a villa that I could move into, permanently, tomorrow. The location is superb and you couldn’t be more centrally placed for every shop, restaurant and other facility on the island. The villa itself is tremendously comfortable, from a living point of view. This villa would not feel crowded even with a full complement of eight people in residence.

An important factor to us is that the villa has the look and feel of a home. We felt at home there more rapidly than usual. After more than seven weeks reviewing eleven different properties, moving on inevitably became somewhat mechanical and unsentimental. We left Petit Careme Villa with more than a hint of sadness. We shall return!

So, how did we feel after a further seven days at the villa three years later?

Well, our only real niggle with the property had been the noisy air-conditioning. That problem has been rectified. It is almost annoying not to have something to complain about. All I can say is that we totally endorse every word we said three years ago and, whether you stay in the Petit Careme Villa or Petit Careme Apartment, are assured of the very highest levels of accommodation in a wonderful environment. What more can I say?
