Pelican Villa - Review Page 3
Accommodation (Continued)
Living Room
The 29sq.m. combined living-kitchen area is, unsurprisingly, the largest room in the apartment. With window areas on three walls, the room is light, bright and breezy.
Very stylish wrought iron furniture and accessories with colourful padded cushions dominate the decorative theme of this property. The dining area features a large glass dining table with six high-back chairs. The dining area is separated from the integral kitchen by a 1.5m serving hatch.
The main seating area has two settees and an easy chair arranged around two matching foot stools. They are sadly a typical case of style over form; they look wonderful, but are clearly not designed for sustained periods of relaxation. A book shelf beneath the kitchen service hatch has a number of books about Tobago and a folder full of pamphlets and flyers advertising a number of popular tours and excursions. Nearby a small stereo-cassette-CD player and handful of CDs offer entertainment. If desperate, guests could try the television. The local Trinidad and Tobago television channels make the countless American channels available on the cable service look almost professional by comparison.
The 5.4sq.m. kitchen is equipped with everything you might require, including a huge 4-ring electric oven, a dishwasher and fridge-freezer. There is also a microwave, electric kettle, coffee filter machine and toaster. The cupboards are stocked with an adequate amount of good quality pots and pans, cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery and other kitchen and dining items.
As with most of the better-managed villas, we were delighted to find a welcome pack of staple foodstuffs.
The living room is not air-conditioned, but the large overhead ceiling fan and through breezes keep the room adequately cool throughout the day.
Utility Area
Between the main living room and the ground-floor bedroom is a general utility area and a small cloakroom with toilet and wash basin.
Utilities include a huge American washing machine and dryer. Detergents and fabric conditioners can be bought at the supermarkets or from Marie’s Place, a small mini-mart at the bottom of the hill leading up to Sanctuary. A picnic cooler is available for beach picnics.
Terrace & Pool
Pelican Villa has two attractive 3.75 x 2.5m terrace areas separated by 3 x 2.8m plunge pool with a depth of 0.9 metres. This pool is adequate for a cooling dip.
The terrace outside the main living room is furnished with a table and six chairs. We found this area ideal for dining. The second terrace, outside the third (ground floor) bedroom, is equipped with four comfortable cushioned deckchairs that convert to sun loungers. A small gas barbeque is located next to the pool.
Staff
Housekeeping services are provided six days a week and the housekeeper, Marclyn, proved to be both helpful and friendly.
She makes the beds, washes up and empties the dishwasher, changes the linen mid-week and the towels every other day. All the linen and towels were immaculately clean and beach towels were provided.
Pool maintenance is conducted daily but only takes five minutes so is not intrusive.
The Sanctuary management team appear to be conducting adequate management of the grounds and making the best of the unfinished hotel and condominiums. The open areas around the development are well-maintained and the grass kept short, although it did appear very parched and brown this year.
