Essex Cottage - Reader Reports & Opinion

We stayed 5 weeks at Gloucester Place and from the beginning were made most welcome greeted by a rum punch and dinner on arrival. and in the morning breakfast with local fruits and juices etc.The rooms in the main house were large bright and airy with access to balconies. All rooms with airconditioning and beds comfortable.Waking up to the sound of the surf on the beaches below and and over the garden with loads of brightly
coloured birds. There is an extensive library of paperback books and a selection of DVD's for a lazy evening in
The cottage is self catering and although there is no air con it is cool and airy open to the breeze with an even better view point of the birds and garden
Bea will if you let her know make a dinner for you as an extra
and very good to.
The house is about an hours drive from the airport around which are the main shopping areas and night life and as the house is that far out would suggest a hire car for sight seeing the rest of the island.
Parlitouvier Bay is a nice quiet beach where you can swim or snorkel and buy fish of the local boats when they come in around 3 pm. Look out for the huge sting rays when the boats come to the jetty. The other way is Englishmans Bay where you can do the same with the convenience of a resturaunt on the beach.
For the more adventuresome there is scuba diving at Speyside 40 minutes away and also at Crown Point.
What more can I say most enjoyable holiday and would recommend to anyone.
If Win and Bea suggest playing dominoes prepare to be beaten as they are experts

We found Gloucester Place to be one of the best places we stayed in Tobago, Win and Bea, the owners, were very welcoming and great hosts, we felt like part of the family, and we were only there 3 nights! We felt we had known them for years!
The bedroom was great, with fabulous sea views and private balcony. The infinity pool was great for a refreshing dip with a great view!
Bea and Win could not do enough for us, we loved the laid back feel of the place and great music win played!
We had a couple of excellant meals cooked by Bea and sat out on the balcony at night drinking beer and chatting like we lived there!
We thoroughly recommend this place!!

We fell in love with Gloucester Place, we stayed in the tree house which was separate from the main house. The house was basic in so much you had to make your own entertainment, there was no TV/Radio/DVD. The kitchen had all you needed to eat in - and the Owners were very friendly and let us use the BBQ at the main house. The views from the house were amazing. It was very isolated (only a road side shack for emergency rations) so the hours drive to Crown Point for food did get a little tiresome.
However the surrounds, Parlatuvier Bay and the welcome we got at the local restaurant (we were the only tourists as it was too early season) was amazing. As were the birds and the sea life at Parlatuvier Bay and the resident Turtle. We are definately going back.

It is difficult to over-rate Essex Cottage or the hospitality of the hosts. It is truly a beautiful place that justifiably receives rave reviews and return visits - one day hopefully by us. If you want peace, beauty a wonderful (probably Tobagos best) beach community, then look no futher. Thank you Win and Bea. Glad you enjoyed the honey. Dick and Gill

My husband and I stayed at Gloucester Place for 6 nights at the end of March and loved it!
The location is fairly remote as it is between a couple fishing villages (Parlatuvier Bay is a 2 minute drive away, Englishman's Bay is about 10 mins. away and Castara is about 15 mins. away). The house sits on a steep cliff overlooking the sea. You can always hear the ocean crashing down below and even see and hear a blow hole. There are lots of different kinds of trees and birds on the property. The hosts took us on 2 different short hikes nearby to see their favorite waterfalls and trees. One of the waterfalls has a pool that's large enough to swim in (and quite refreshing). There's a small market with snacks and drinks (including beer) within walking distance and another store and restuarant in Parlatuvier. There is one place to eat on the beach at Englishman's Bay and several places in Castara.
Breakfast varies from day to day, but if you let Bea know what you like, she will provide. We enjoyed the fresh papaya and pumpkin bread toast. She even cooked dinner for us our first night and once more before we left. Her meals were by far the best we had during our stay in Tobago.
The room was very nice...pillowtop mattress, feather pillows, super soft sheets, A/C and private bathroom. The water is safe to drink out of the tap. Decorations are tasteful and unique. You also get your own balcony with a view. And the whole house is constructed of concrete which means that you can't hear your neighbors. Having a pool on the property was nice as it is so hot there in Tobago that it's nice to take a dip from time to time.
The hosts were very welcoming and fun to talk with. They recommended we go to The Boathouse in Castara for dinner. On Wednesdays, the Boathouse offers dinner and live music (steel pan music) for $150TT per person. Well worth it! Go at sunset and take your own beer. (When we went, they weren't serving alcohol because they didn't have their liquor licnense.) We just took a small cooler that Win & Bea loaned us.
If you're looking for a home away from home where you can visit uncrowded beaches and "get away from it all", Gloucester Place is for you.
