Toad Hall - Reader Reports & Opinion

Had a last minute stay in Castara and was scrambling to find a place. Steve responded to my inquiry right away and I booked Toad Heights for 2 nights. Myself and four friends had an amazing time. We found the house to be clean, kitchen pretty well stocked, bathroom clean, safes available, and space perfect for our needs. The high ceilings and open kitchen were a plus. We didn't have dish soap, but got some minutes after asking. The only complaint I have is that the beds are really soft. It may be great for some, but I am the type who needs a firm mattress for my back. I read in some other reviews about not having hot water. This didn't bother anyone especially because the water was luke warm-not freezing. The most notable thing about our stay at Toad Heights was the friendship we formed with Look Up, Nigel, and Carley. We had a really wonderful day with them. They took us out in their boat, went fishing, snorkeling, cooked fish and breadfruit on a secluded beach, bird watched, and had an all around fun time (and all at an extremely reasonable rate). They even cooked a fish broth and curry fish dish for us later that night. We also arrived in Castara just in time for the harvest. Again Look Up and friends made sure that we were entertained. All people in the village invited us into their homes and showered us with food and drink. I am very pleased with our stay at Toad Heights and recommend it to anyone who is looking for a place with character, space, simplicity, and friendliness.

The house was lovely with everything you might need (except good knives and bowls). However Look Up (though a very nice bloke) did absolutelly nothing in the two weeks I washed and cleaned all the sheets cleaned the house and waited 1 week for him to bring me a boom to clean up.He's a lovely man but when we ran out of gas we couldn't get hold of him,hen we finally did he told me to go get some (even though there was no spare and I have 4 little ones 7 and under)
Even more imporantly , we ran out of water as they shut it off in the dry season, but all 3 off the tanks were empty
My advice..... Really amazing place bull frog noises great. Look up nice bloke but complletely crap at caretaker and far too much wide boy asked for a tip several tuimes and rally got he impression we were way of making monay. Shame as virtually all the other people we met in castara were the opposite.Reallty wonderful place need to change the caretaker

We stayed at 'Toad Heights' for two weeks in March 2009. We found this spot using Google search for a location in Castara villige and so we got directed to Steves website.
The communication via e-mail was very straightforward, we were happy to made our reservation and curious how everything would turn out.
Everything we found was well above our expectations. We spent two wonderful weeks there, lived in the middle of a real Carribean village, met great people there and would have liked to stay longer.
If you are looking for details about the place itself, just check the reviews below. Sure, I have slept in more comfortable beds, there is no hot water, dogs are barking and sometimes the neighbours play their music loud.
So what? If we would have wanted a wellnes resort, we should have went to Miami...
We found true life, wounderful people and had a really good time.
Thank you Rita and Steve, we are looking forward to come back.

We stayed in Tadpoles for a week in March 2009.
As probably the cheapest accommodation available in Castara we find it really good value for money.
Spacious room with a double bed, fully equipped kitchenette, fridge and a fan - that was actually everything which we needed
during our holidays in Tobago!
It's situated in a lovely spot, which looks like the edge of a rainforest. You can see and hear lots of different
species of birds every morning. There are banana and lemon trees within the property - what a difference in taste! :)
Steven & Rita are very friendly and relaxed people, always willing to help.
Rainforest tour with Horace - also highly recommended!

We stayed in the Leapfrog apartment for 3 weeks. We only booked 2, but didn't want to leave. What a beautiful place Castara is and Steve and Rita who run Toad Hall were fantastic hosts. They made us feel so welcome, even invting us to a huge fish stew cook up with their friends and neighbours. Steve gave us a brief tour round the island and his staff looked after our every need. The apartment was lovely and comfortable with everything we could need and our hosts were more than happy to help us out with anything extra, for example, use of internet, charging our Ipods, lending of books and good advice. Weĺl be back there as soon as we can. Thoroughly recommended.
