myTobago Review

Sherwood Park Apartments, Carnbee, Tobago

The following review was produced during a 7-night stay at Sherwood Park Apartments in February 2017.

Introduction

Sherwood Park Apartments was the culmination of a dream. The story behind the project explains the fervent enthusiasm and dedication of Dutch owner Fred Abbink.

While still at school, Fred befriended a boy from Suriname (Dutch Guiana). After his friend returned to Suriname, Fred found a job, saved hard and flew to Suriname to share the summer holiday with his friend. What an adventure it must have been for a 15-year old boy, travelling alone to this far-off land. It was an adventure that became an annual event.

It was during an early visit with his friend that Fred first heard of Tobago. Although he cannot explain why, he simply knew that it was somewhere he had to visit.

Dreams of Tobago persisted. Many years later and determined to resolve the matter once and for all, Fred jumped on a plane and travelled to the island. He fell in love with Tobago as soon as he stepped off the plane. Returning to Holland, he pledged to return. So contagious was his enthusiasm that work colleagues became captivated by his plans and agreed to partner him in a project to build a small guesthouse. The 10-apartment Sherwood Park Apartments opened in 1997.

Location

The property sit in a lush green fold of the south-eastern flank of Mount Irvine on the northern outskirts of Carnbee village, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

As the crow flies, the apartments are 1½ miles from the Atlantic coast and around 2½ miles from the Caribbean coast. Being in the centre of the Crown Point-Scarborough-Plymouth triangle, where over 90% of the population of Tobago live, every beach, restaurant, supermarket and shop within the most popular, and populace, part of the island is within an easy 20-minute drive of Sherwood Park. The ever-popular Caribbean beaches at Grange, Mount Irvine and Grafton are little more than 5-minutes away; The airport, Store Bay and Pigeon Point a mere 15-minute drive.

The location does mean that guests can't walk to the beach. However, I will now stress my leading Tobago Top Tip: to get the best from Tobago, you need your own transport. Even if your accommodation is within walking distance of a beach and/or restaurant, you are likely to want a change of scene within a few days. Believe me, it is FAR better to rent a car and stay in cheaper accommodation than be stuck in any accommodation without transport. Without the ability to get yourself about, you will miss most of the joy of Tobago.

Carnbee has little to offer the average tourist. This is of little consequence while ensconced at Sherwood Park Apartments as you are not even aware that you are near a village. Carnbee does have one significant advantage, however. It boasts a branch of the island's small supermarket chain, Penny Savers. You will be able to get all your basics here, but don't expect the choice you would take for granted in European or North American supermarkets. There is also a ATM cash machine and excellent pharmacy adjacent to the store. Tobago's main shopping centre, the Gulf City Mall in nearby Lowlands is just a 5-6-minute drive from the apartments.

Architecture

The ten self-contained self-catering apartments are housed within an attractive two-storey building, cleverly designed to catch the cooling sea breezes whilst giving views across attractive gardens and the surrounding green hillsides. The six upper floor apartments have views of the Atlantic Ocean, glimpses of which can be seen from the ground floor apartments. Although there are several neighbouring houses, the overriding ambience is one of greenery and nature. You truly believe that you are in a far more remote situation. It has proven a hugely relaxing and peaceful environment on each of our stays.

The property makes optimum use of the natural contours of the land, curving around a central focal point – the swimming pool – with terraced gardens dropping to an attractive paved patio or terrace and then on down to the swimming pool itself.

The white stucco finish of the building acts as a lovely backdrop to the pale-yellow doors and shutters of each apartment. The predominant colour, however, is the Caribbean-blue of the roof and veranda balustrades that so perfectly match the colour of the swimming pool and contrast so beautifully with the vibrant colours of the surrounding landscape.

Although perfectly suited to families, Sherwood Park is not a place where you expect to find hordes of children charging around the pool, or loud music playing. Other than the occasional sound of a yapping dog at a distant property, the only sound tends to be that of birdsong. No traffic noise, no loud music from village rum shops, and only the occasional cocrico (Tobago's noisy national bird) or cockerel to disturb your sleep.

The property has no specific facilities for the disabled, but the ground floor rooms are accessible by wheelchair. Access to the terrace and pool would present problems to those with limited mobility, but I am told it has proved entirely possible with the assistance of the ever-willing staff.

Accommodation

Sherwood Park's ten self-contained studio apartments comprise two Suites and eight Standard apartments, each charmingly named after a species of local bird.

The Suites are located on the upper floor. They are similar to the standard apartments, but 10% larger, with a gross floor area of around 33sq.metres, compared to the 29sq.m. of the Standard apartments. All rooms are furnished and equipped in similar style.

There are four Standard apartments on each floor. Each has a lockable interconnecting door to the adjacent apartment; ideal for families. For a small extra charge, an additional bed can be added in any apartment. Those on the upper (first) floor have high vaulted open ceilings, whereas the ground floor apartments have a conventional ceiling. The upper apartments, both Suites and Standard, benefit more from the cooling breezes so are not air-conditioned, but do have a large ceiling fan and an oscillating floor fan. The four Standard apartments on the ground floor are fully air-conditioned with efficient and quiet modern split-units.

Until you have visited Tobago, it is hard to appreciate the cooling effect of the north-east trade winds and how these wonderful sea breezes can often make air-conditioning irrelevant. This is particularly true of properties built before the Tobago land-rush, as these properties tended to have been built on the best plots of land and the building orientated to face the prevailing winds. Being on the upper floor of the building, our Suite was not air conditioned – nor needed to be.

The ten apartments are furnished in similar fashion with attractive high-quality tropical wickerwork tables and chairs. Each apartment has a pair of single beds, pushed together to form a wide super-king size bed, nearly 7-feet wide. The beds are fitted with firm, but comfortable, high-quality box spring mattresses and a suspended mosquito net. We saw no sign of mosquitoes during our stay, so the net remained a decorative feature. Despite working in the apartment throughout the day, I never found temperatures other than wonderful and we slept like babes.

In addition to small bedside tables, each apartment is furnished with a 1m wardrobe plus a small concealed security safe for wallets, passports and other valuables. The Suites have an additional chest of drawers.

Whilst the quality of most furnishings in the Sherwood Park Apartments is high, the plumbing and bathroom fittings do rather let the side down and would benefit from upgrading. In fairness, this is a typical problem due to the corrosive effects of the sea breezes. The bathrooms are of adequate size, particularly in the Suites, and everything worked as expected. The large walk-in showers have both hot and cold water, but this is the only source of hot water in any of the apartments.

A pair of double-width folding shuttered doors open onto a narrow (0.9m) balcony to the front of each apartment. The balconies are furnished with marble-effect tables and a pair of wickerwork chairs. The ground floor apartments also offer direct access from their veranda into the garden and down to the main terrace and pool. A washing line is fitted on each balcony/veranda.

Each apartment has a kitchenette equipped with a medium-sized refrigerator with freezer compartment, four-ring gas stove, microwave oven, filter coffee maker and an electric toaster. There is a small selection of pots, pans and cooking utensils and all items were of reasonable quality and clean. It is a shame that the provided stock of crockery and cutlery was so limited.

Against this slight negative, prior to our arrival the fridge had been stocked with a welcome pack of basic essential supplies – bread, margarine, eggs, milk, orange juice and water. This is a very nice touch because most flights arrive in the late afternoon and few visitors will relish the thought of shopping for groceries immediately on arrival.

Every apartment is fully serviced every other day, with a full change of linen and towels.Management do ask that the towels are not taken to the beach, but use at the swimming pool is perfectly acceptable. The linen and towels were of good quality and, like everything else at the apartments, immaculately clean.

In keeping with the nature of Sherwood Park Apartments, the apartments are not equipped with telephones or televisions. A small reception area on the ground floor is furnished as a lounge area and has cable television. Telephone calls can be made from the reception office, but this is only manned for a couple of hours each morning and afternoon. Complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access is available in every room, the main reception area, terrace and potentially even down to the swimming pool.

Terrace & Swimming Pool

A dozen steps down from the main building takes one to a large and attractive terrace. This is furnished with two large palm-thatched sunshades that provide shelter to sets of tables and chairs. Adjacent to the terrace, a charcoal barbeque unit is available for use by guests.

A final few steps take you down to the 13½x6½ metre swimming pool. The depth of the pool varies from 0.5m to about 1.9m. A pair of palm-thatched sun umbrellas, identical to those on the terrace, are situated on the pool deck and provide welcome areas of shade throughout much of the day. There are several chairs and sun loungers around the pool, but padded cushions would have made the loungers more comfortable.

We would certainly endorse the claim made on the Sherwood Park Apartments website: this is not a place where you need to get up at the crack of dawn to place your towel on a sun-lounger.

Conclusion

The Sherwood Park Apartments offer comfortable and affordable accommodation in a tranquil and central location. These factors alone should guarantee the continued success of the establishment. When you add the cheerful and friendly hospitality of General Manager Nigel Pirtheesingh and other members of his staff, you have a winning combination.

It would be difficult to find another property that offers such a winning combination of friendly hospitality and affordable comfortable accommodation in such a tranquil setting.

Everything about the property reflects the essential ambience and character of Tobago itself. It illustrates the very best of the island's relaxed, laidback, friendly personality.

As the Sherwood Park website states, "Arrive a stranger, Depart a Friend". Never was a truer word spoken. What more can one say?

Crystine from Trinidad visited in September 2021 and awarded

My husband and I stayed here 9 years ago and it was lovely. We decided to take a little mini staycation with our 8 year old in September... The apartment looks like it hasn't been upgraded at all since 9 years ago. The toilet was leaking, the patio chairs were completely run down and not useable. The pictures are not at all recent. The pool hadn't been treated for some time and because it rained up to the day before our trip they couldn't treat it still. We didn't stay but instead requested a refund and found a better place on the island to spend our week. We were truly disappointed.

Neil and Linda Roberts from U.K. visited in January 2018 and awarded

We had stayed here before and came back for a few days as part of a longer break. The large apartment was spotless and Nigel was as helpful as ever. It was very quiet, as was most of the island, and we would be happy to return again when in this part of the Tobago.

Neil and Linda Roberts.
