All accommodation benefits from weekly servicing, at which time the maid will also change the bed linen and towels. Clean linen and towels are available should guests wish a change mid-week. Beach towels are not provided, so as with most places, it is important to remember to bring them with you.
Elaine is an excellent cook. Although all the accommodation has full self-catering facilities, Elaine offers guests the option of a full English breakfast and/or dinner, at extra cost. I can assure readers that one of Elaine's full breakfasts will set them up for the entire day. Catering is only available on a pre-arranged basis, so it is important to make arrangements at least a full day in advance.
We enjoyed five days in this two-bedroom apartment. Elaine has only recently started accepting guests and all the apartments were vacant, so she showed us around and offered us our choice. We fell in love with the pretty and quirky (Elaine's words, not ours) little cottage, but the piles of luggage and equipment we are forced to bring for our two month review tours meant that the larger two-bedroom apartment was a more practical choice, if only to get rid of the cases and our 32kg equipment trunk. This spacious 875sq.ft. apartment occupies the upper front half of the property, with views over the attractively landscaped front garden, with its colourful tropical shrubs and plants – not to mention the wonderful bed of multi-coloured orchids sprouting from their fascinating bed of coconut husks. The overall effect is one of vibrant colour and lush green vegetation.
As you enter the apartment you are struck by a feeling of light and space. The ceiling rises from 11ft to around 20ft, with an inner lining of timber to insulate the room from the hot corrugated tin roof. Windows on two aspects of the room ensure maximum light. The property is set in a lovely breezy location. Temperatures have been comfortable day and night. We have simply ensured that the large quiet ceiling fans have been on at all times and followed our standard practice of opening all windows and doors first thing in the morning to ensure maximum air passage and to prevent any build up of heat.
The open-plan living area is attractively furnished with two sofas set around a small coffee table with adjacent small cable TV set. Nearby is a large dining table, which could comfortably seat eight. Painted a light pastel mint green, the walls throughout the apartment are decorated with attractive coloured drawings of quaint old local buildings and houses.
The kitchen area stretches across two walls of the living room. Fittings include a very large bottled gas five-ring stove with top grill, a microwave oven, electric toaster, kettle and a fridge with separate freezer compartment. The double-drainer sink is plumbed with both hot and cold water and 18ft of kitchen surface covers more cupboard space than you could expect to fill for the average holiday. An adequate stock of crockery, cutlery, glassware and kitchen utensils are provided.
The larger (285sq.ft.) bedroom has a separate en suite dressing room and bathroom. The room has double French windows leading out onto the common wraparound balcony. Whilst it would be doubtful that any intruder could get to the balcony without alerting the property's resident guard dog, many people might consider it imprudent to sleep with the balcony doors open. However, the room is fitted with a highly efficient and very quiet Toshiba split-unit air-conditioner. Alternatively, you can rely upon the large and quiet ceiling fan.
This bedroom has a 53-inch double bed. Additional furnishings include attractive matching cane bedside tables with lamps and a comfortable armchair.
The en suite bathroom is furnished with two wardrobes, both sporting full-length mirrors and offering nearly 6ft of full and half-length hanging space, plus numerous drawers. The washbasin is nicely tiled and provides both hot and cold water. The bathroom fittings exhibited the usual corrosion found in all Caribbean plumbing when more than a year or so old. None of the bathrooms in the property featured shaver sockets, so we had to hand-crank our electric toothbrushes.
The attractive 5x6ft fully-tiled walk-in shower promised great things. Sadly, water pressure was variable – a common problem on Tobago. Although there was ample hot water, the shower did not always provide quite the cascade that the size of the cubicle suggested.
Marginally smaller at 250sq.ft. the second bedroom was equally attractive and comfortable. This room has windows on two aspects, each protected by internal security grills, so the windows can be safely left open at night. Mosquitoes were non existent and the large ceiling fan rendered air-conditioning unnecessary.
The second bedroom is furnished with a double bed. There is ample room for a 3ft single bed which is available as an optional and chargeable extra should a fifth person wish to share the apartment. Additional furnishings include bedside tables and lamps, a chair, a wardrobe offering 2ft of full-length hanging space and a chest of drawers.
A toilet and washbasin occupy a cubicle in the room, with a separate, attractive, fully-tiled shower adjacent.
Immediately outside the apartment is a 360sq ft. covered terrace shared by both apartments on the upper floor. The terrace is furnished with a low table and four padded garden chairs, but a more-than-comfortable hammock.
