myTobago Review

Our reviews are devoid of marketing hype. We aim to provide concise, unbiased factual information that will help you find Tobago holiday accommodation that perfectly matches your hopes, requirements and expectations.

The following review was produced during a 5-night stay at Orchid Villa Apartments.

Orchid Villa Apartments is a smart apartment house, owned and run by a hospitable English lady. Centrally located in Mount Pleasant in the popular south-west of Tobago, the property offers two 2-bedroom apartments, a single studio apartment and a charming one-bedroom cottage. All the accommodation has full self-catering facilities, but owner Elaine also offers catering options such as breakfast and dinner, at extra cost.

With a maximum accommodation capacity of 14 visitors, the property is suitable for small groups of friends and family. It should be noted, however, that young children are not accepted.

Facilities at Orchid Villa Apartments include a cold-water Jacuzzi, plus a games room with pool table and exercise equipment. Construction of a new swimming pool is due to be completed around July 2006.

Orchid Villa is situated in the pleasant low-density residential area of Mount Pleasant, the first village on the Shirvan Road (Caribbean coast road) just north of the main road between the airport and Scarborough. It is a short 10-minute drive from the airport and just far enough away from the rather untidy sprawl of Crown Point. The villa has no sea views, but looks out over the gently rising slopes of Mount Irvine and the start of Tobago's hilly central spine.

The villa is discreetly tucked away down a short unmade road on the edge of Mount Pleasant. No signs mark its presence and visitors would have great difficulty finding Orchid Villa without detailed directions. This very quiet residential area typifies Tobago; large and impressive properties sitting cheek by jowl with neighbouring wooden houses and shacks. Tobagonians tend to have a strong sense of community and are generally very protective towards visitors, so when staying in a local community (as opposed to the few gated communities servicing overseas visitors), you will invariably experience nothing but courtesy and politeness from neighbouring local residents.

The location of Orchid Villa Apartments places it firmly in the centre of the most popular part of Tobago. Buccoo, Grange and Mount Irvine Bay beaches are less than a five minute drive away, as are 90% of the island's best restaurants and the three leading supermarkets. Store Bay and Pigeon Point are only 10 minutes drive away. As usual, I strongly recommend that visitors rent a car or 4x4; it is the only way to get the best out of Tobago, no matter where you stay. For those without their own transport, Orchid Villa is just a 3 minute walk from a main road, where you can catch a local bus service or hail a cheap public taxi.

Orchid Villa is a large and attractive rendered concrete two-storey building. The low pitch of the wide off-centre roof and wrap around balcony on the upper floor give the building great character and remind me of Alpine chalets.

Like all its neighbours, the villa is surrounded by trees and dense vegetation. Before arrival I assumed that neighbouring properties were bound to have chickens and cockerels and that the lush vegetation was sure to attract Tobago's raucous national bird, the turkey-like Cocrico. We therefore expected some degree of disturbed sleep. I am delighted to report that both were near non-existent; or if they were, I certainly never heard their early morning (3am onwards) calls. Barking dogs are always a problem in Tobago villages, but barking sessions seldom lasted long and never disturbed our sleep. All in all, it has proven to be the quietest location of our current round of reviews.

As I look out of the windows, I can see little but greenery and hardly anything of neighbouring properties or other man-made intrusions. The Mount Pleasant village playing field is just a few hundred yards away. A Heritage Festival fete was held there two nights ago. We were treated to three hours of entertainment; pan (steel band) music, drum playing, singing and cultural acts. The local steel band practice hall is located at the far end of the playing field. It is Carnival next week and one of the highlights is the steel band competition, which is very fiercely fought. The village players have been practicing for several hours every evening. It has been bliss relaxing on our balcony, a bottle of cold Carib in hand, with the background sound of a full steel pan orchestra.

Although the rooms are spacious and the doors wide, access to the property would be tricky for wheelchair users and no special facilities are provided for those with mobility problems. Both of the two-bedroom apartments are on the upper floor. The steps leading to them are wide and in two stages, so should present little problem to the elderly or infirm.

All accommodation benefits from weekly servicing, at which time the maid will also change the bed linen and towels. Clean linen and towels are available should guests wish a change mid-week. Beach towels are not provided, so as with most places, it is important to remember to bring them with you.

Elaine is an excellent cook. Although all the accommodation has full self-catering facilities, Elaine offers guests the option of a full English breakfast and/or dinner, at extra cost. I can assure readers that one of Elaine's full breakfasts will set them up for the entire day. Catering is only available on a pre-arranged basis, so it is important to make arrangements at least a full day in advance.

Apartment One

We enjoyed five days in this two-bedroom apartment. Elaine has only recently started accepting guests and all the apartments were vacant, so she showed us around and offered us our choice. We fell in love with the pretty and quirky (Elaine's words, not ours) little cottage, but the piles of luggage and equipment we are forced to bring for our two month review tours meant that the larger two-bedroom apartment was a more practical choice, if only to get rid of the cases and our 32kg equipment trunk. This spacious 875sq.ft. apartment occupies the upper front half of the property, with views over the attractively landscaped front garden, with its colourful tropical shrubs and plants – not to mention the wonderful bed of multi-coloured orchids sprouting from their fascinating bed of coconut husks. The overall effect is one of vibrant colour and lush green vegetation.

As you enter the apartment you are struck by a feeling of light and space. The ceiling rises from 11ft to around 20ft, with an inner lining of timber to insulate the room from the hot corrugated tin roof. Windows on two aspects of the room ensure maximum light. The property is set in a lovely breezy location. Temperatures have been comfortable day and night. We have simply ensured that the large quiet ceiling fans have been on at all times and followed our standard practice of opening all windows and doors first thing in the morning to ensure maximum air passage and to prevent any build up of heat.

The open-plan living area is attractively furnished with two sofas set around a small coffee table with adjacent small cable TV set. Nearby is a large dining table, which could comfortably seat eight. Painted a light pastel mint green, the walls throughout the apartment are decorated with attractive coloured drawings of quaint old local buildings and houses.

The kitchen area stretches across two walls of the living room. Fittings include a very large bottled gas five-ring stove with top grill, a microwave oven, electric toaster, kettle and a fridge with separate freezer compartment. The double-drainer sink is plumbed with both hot and cold water and 18ft of kitchen surface covers more cupboard space than you could expect to fill for the average holiday. An adequate stock of crockery, cutlery, glassware and kitchen utensils are provided.

The larger (285sq.ft.) bedroom has a separate en suite dressing room and bathroom. The room has double French windows leading out onto the common wraparound balcony. Whilst it would be doubtful that any intruder could get to the balcony without alerting the property's resident guard dog, many people might consider it imprudent to sleep with the balcony doors open. However, the room is fitted with a highly efficient and very quiet Toshiba split-unit air-conditioner. Alternatively, you can rely upon the large and quiet ceiling fan.

This bedroom has a 53-inch double bed. Additional furnishings include attractive matching cane bedside tables with lamps and a comfortable armchair.

The en suite bathroom is furnished with two wardrobes, both sporting full-length mirrors and offering nearly 6ft of full and half-length hanging space, plus numerous drawers. The washbasin is nicely tiled and provides both hot and cold water. The bathroom fittings exhibited the usual corrosion found in all Caribbean plumbing when more than a year or so old. None of the bathrooms in the property featured shaver sockets, so we had to hand-crank our electric toothbrushes.

The attractive 5x6ft fully-tiled walk-in shower promised great things. Sadly, water pressure was variable – a common problem on Tobago. Although there was ample hot water, the shower did not always provide quite the cascade that the size of the cubicle suggested.

Marginally smaller at 250sq.ft. the second bedroom was equally attractive and comfortable. This room has windows on two aspects, each protected by internal security grills, so the windows can be safely left open at night. Mosquitoes were non existent and the large ceiling fan rendered air-conditioning unnecessary.

The second bedroom is furnished with a double bed. There is ample room for a 3ft single bed which is available as an optional and chargeable extra should a fifth person wish to share the apartment. Additional furnishings include bedside tables and lamps, a chair, a wardrobe offering 2ft of full-length hanging space and a chest of drawers.

A toilet and washbasin occupy a cubicle in the room, with a separate, attractive, fully-tiled shower adjacent.

Immediately outside the apartment is a 360sq ft. covered terrace shared by both apartments on the upper floor. The terrace is furnished with a low table and four padded garden chairs, but a more-than-comfortable hammock.

Apartment Two

The second two-bedroom apartment is also located on the upper floor of the property, next door to Apartment 1. It is slightly smaller, at 730sq.ft. However, it can still be described as spacious and would provide very comfortable accommodation for up to four people.

First impressions are important and we were not disappointed as we entered the main living room and kitchen area. Lime green cupboard doors and vibrant colourful upholstery fabric on the settee, armchair and four table chairs around the smoked glass dining table make the room bright and cosy. Attractive prints of Norman Parkinson originals decorate the apartment and evoke memories of times past. Norman had strong links with Tobago and his family still have a house and land here.

A new fridge/freezer and microwave were installed during our stay. Other kitchen fittings include a Black & Decker Toast-R-Oven, an electric kettle and a four-ring gas oven with eye-level grill.

A passageway leads off the living area and provides access to the two bedrooms and shared bathroom. The 225sq.ft. master bedroom also has direct access into the bathroom. This bedroom is furnished with a 58-inch Queen-sized bed. A single bed can optionally be installed in the room, but Elaine prefers to avoid this. She feels, quite correctly, that because the apartment has only a single bathroom, five people sharing would represent a lower standard of accommodation than she would wish to offer.

The bedroom is furnished with two wardrobes with full-length mirrors. Together they provide nearly 8-feet of full and half-length hanging space. A matching chest of drawers provides more than adequate storage space. Bedside tables with lamps and a chair complete the furnishings.

Glazed double French windows lead out onto the common balcony. Since our departure, we understand that security grills have been fitted so that these doors can be left open at night for ventilation, as there are no other windows in the room. The room also has a large overhead ceiling fan and a free-standing oscillating electric fan. All rooms benefit from decorative ventilation bricks just below the ceiling that allow breeze in.

The second bedroom is somewhat smaller at 140sq.ft. but can still be considered adequately spacious. It is furnished with a 53-inch double bed, and matching wooden bedside tables (with lamps), wardrobe (with 2ft of full-length hanging space), chest of drawers and a chair.

This bedroom is on the breezy east side of the property and obtains maximum benefit from the trade winds, with windows on two aspects. I suspect that even the supplied ceiling fan in unnecessary, so you might be initially surprised to find that the room is fitted with an excellent Toshiba split-unit air-conditioning unit. However, this rooms gets the benefit of the sun all day, so the air-con is a sensible precaution.

The attractive single bathroom is furnished with the usual trio: washbasin with hot and cold water, toilet and another huge fully-tiled walk-in shower.

Apartment 3 - The Studio

The studio apartment is located at the rear of the ground floor and provides views over the Jacuzzi and pool (when completed). It is not air-conditioned and has no fans, but benefits from north-facing windows and an east-facing door, both of which can be left open, with security grills protecting the occupants.

Offering a total of 240sq.ft. of floor space, the studio apartment is spacious and offers ideal accommodation for two people. The apartment is furnished with two (3ft) single beds, a single bedside table (but no lamp) and a small display unit with cupboards. The kitchenette is equipped with a four-ring gas oven and a fridge, plus a separate freezer unit. The sink provides both hot and cold water, with the double drainer unit representing the only work surface. Adequate storage space is provided in the base of the sink unit, which has four drawers, plus an overhead display/storage unit. A small wooden table with two stools forms a dining area.

The attached bathroom is highly spacious. Perhaps it should be called a bathroom/dressing room as it is furnished with a wardrobe, offering 2ft of full length hanging space, plus three drawers, a both full length and half-length mirrors. As if this wasn't enough, a built-in storage cupboard offers even more storage space than the average couple on holiday here are likely to need.

The bathroom enjoys one of the huge and attractive, fully tiled walk-in showers that seem to be a signature theme for Orchid Villa Apartments. As with all rooms, both the shower and washbasin are plumbed for both hot and cold water.

The Cottage

In many ways the detached self-contained cottage is the property's piece resistance. Offering a total accommodation area of 300sq.ft., it is obviously much smaller than the two-bedroom apartments but it just oozes character. It is also superbly furnished and feels warm and welcoming from the moment you pass through the main door. Pastel yellow walls compliment the attractive floor tiles and the overall effect is light, breezy, modern and well-maintained.

The cottage comprises of three rooms: the living room/kitchen, a large bedroom and a bathroom. All the accommodation at Orchid Villa Apartments is comfortable and inviting but I can see many a guest falling in love with the cottage and returning to spend many a vacation there. The combined kitchen and living area are tastefully decorated with a very comfortable two-seater settee and armchair placed around a glass-topped coffee table and facing a small cable TV set. Just inside the main door is a small dining table with two kitchen stools. I suspect that most guests will prefer to eat al fresco and so will take advantage of the plastic table and chair immediately outside the cottage, next to the Jacuzzi.

The kitchen area covers two walls of the room and comprises of 12ft of highly attractive kitchen storage and display units. A tall combined fridge and freezer is complimented by a double-bowl sink with hot and cold water, an electric coffee filter machine, kettle, toaster, a microwave unit and a four-ring gas stove with grill. There is a very adequate supply of crockery, cutlery, glassware and kitchen utensils.

The bedroom is furnished with two 39-inch single beds pushed together. Additional furnishings include bedside tables with lamps, a wardrobe offering 24inches of full-length hanging space plus dressing table and full and half-length mirrors, plus a chest of drawers.

The adjacent bathroom may not boast the huge walk-in showers of the main house, but at 4x3 feet is still highly spacious – the sort of shower you can comfortably shower and dry in without fear of banging your arms and elbows. Like all other rooms in the property, all plumbing offers both hot and cold water.

The cottage is not air-conditioned. There is absolutely no need. There are opening windows or doors with security grills on all four aspects. By leaving the bathroom door open, it is therefore possible to ensure that every room of the cottage benefits from the cooling breezes no matter which direction the wind blows from. Both the kitchen and bedroom have a large and quiet ceiling fan and a smaller oscillating fan is provided in the bedroom.

Common Features

There is a lovely secluded garden at the rear of the property, offering total privacy from neighbours and the road leading to adjacent properties. This rear garden is home to the cottage and to a 9ft-square cold-water Jacuzzi. During our visit, Ryan, the gardener, felled two small mango trees in order to start clearance for a full swimming pool that Elaine intends to have built during the spring of 2006.

One of the 'problems' in Tobago is what to do in the evenings or on those occasional rainy days. Orchid Villa Apartments is fairly unique in that is has a really useful games and exercise room. The rooms concerned are actually another small apartment, but rather than providing additional accommodation, Elaine has thoughtfully decided to add a little extra value to the existing accommodation.

The games room is dominated by a full-size American pool table. An adjacent room, with en suite bathroom, forms a mini-gym with a few pieces of exercise (torture) equipment. A television and VCR with fitness videos is available on request to help with your exercising.

Security at the premises is excellent. The entrance is protected by a high gate and the borders by a high fence, topped with barbed wire in some areas. Bougainvillea and other plants almost totally conceal the fence and surround the property in a riot of colour rather than making you feel that you are in a compound.

Orchid Villa's hidden weapon, however, is Ashanti – Elaine's lovely young Rotweiler bitch. She is a lovely, affectionate and obedient animal. Being an intelligent breed of dog, she also can readily distinguish between resident guest and "no-gooder". She roams the property throughout the day and her presence is very obvious to passing locals. However, she was never intrusive or the slightest nuisance. Her deep, loud bark would clearly warn intruders off.

Without doubt, Orchid Villa Apartments deserves serious consideration by anyone looking for self-catering or bed and breakfast accommodation in the popular south-western region of Tobago. The apartments are spacious, clean, reasonably maintained and offer very high levels of comfort.

We try not to review accommodation property with price in mind, because value is highly subjective and rates often change without our notice. However, as a new accommodation property, without the high occupancy of repeat guests that can be expected in future years, the current rates at Orchid Villa Apartments appear to be an incredible bargain, particularly when compared to most decent self-catering accommodation on the island.

We wish Elaine, Ashanti and Orchid Villa Apartments well. We are sure that the apartments will form the basis of many wonderful holidays on Tobago for a very great number of visitors.

WHAT AN AMAZING PLACE.My partner and I stayed in the cottage of Orchid villa for a total of two weeks during the Christmas vacation of 2016. We returned in January 2017 because the tranquility and positive energy of this place draws one in and makes you forget the adversity in which you may have emerged from.

The property is ideally located in close proximity to both Scarborough and Crown point, the two largest towns of Tobago. This was excellent for us because we periodically purchased supplies for the duration of our stay. With that said, the house is nestled in tropical greenery, with picturesque landscape and the serene melody of chirping birds. It is also equidistant to either coast from which to explore the island.

We spent many memorable hours enjoying plunges in the pool and walks in the garden. We also indulged in a few competitive games of 8 ball pool. The place is clean, well furnished and incredibly comfortable.

My partner and i took advantage of the fully equipped kitchen creating a variety of satisfying meals. There was also a bar be que pit which was available for our use. We could not have asked for more but the icing on the cake was our efficient and gracious host Mrs. Frances Elaine Morganti. Willing to go out of her way to satisfy her guests, she approached us with an affable demeanour and welcomed us into her home. This may sound silly but i considered it an honor being guests of this prestige woman. I can assure you, we shall be returning if she will have us.

THANK YOU SO MUCH Mrs Morganti for your abundance of kindness and we continue to hold you in high regard.

Had a lovely stay here last month. The hostess was very much accommodating and the apartment was comfortable with all the amenities we needed for our week long stay. The property is very close to the grocery and shops and a little drive along will take you to the mall and the highway. I would definitely recommend Orchid Villa for anyone who would like a vacation where the place they stay is away from the hustle and bustle of swarms of tourists but yet close enough to easily get to all the various attractions.
