FELIX - INTO THE HEART OF THE STORM


I picked up this link from the Carib Storm Watch site.

Hurricane was the most explosive storm ever to visit the Caribbean and intensified from a Tropical Depression to a Category 5 Hurricane in less then 2 days.

The video (with a very appropriate soundtrack) shows 20 miles of the aircraft's passage into the centre of Felix and the end is worth waiting for ... to see the moon shining on the wall of Felix' eye.

The previous Hunter Hurricane crew got a real battering and had to abort their mission.

But how nut must one be to fly right in the middle of a hurricane? I guess very nut...

Hopefully no hurrican will hit Tobago this year and also not all the other beautiful islands of the Caribbean!

Hi Paul,

I have just returned from 2 weeks in glorious Tobago.Tropical Storm Felix came past in the middle of our holiday with high winds. heavy rain,thunder and lightening for 20-24 hours then back to sunny weather again for the rest of the week.
Also on the last day we had just checked in at Crown Point when we saw the marvellous sight of a waterspout over the sea, it only lasted a minute before dissapearing back into the cloud, however i did manage to take a photo.

TROPICAL STORM NOEL

Pronounced 'Knoll' the NOAA kindly advises us.

In Liquid Sunshine this weekend I mentioned that there would be some very disturbed weather around Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Haiti.

The Tropical Storm (or wind) issue is pretty academic unless Noel gains hurricane strength as he crosses Cuba ... it is the rain ... Noel is a major rain event with huge swathes of intense rain falling over the central Caribbean ... even the outer bands have recently affected Tobago which is a long way from this system.

So ... expect disruption to air travel across the Caribbean and between the US and Caribbean as copious quantities of rain fall over Haiti, the Dominican, Jamaica and Cuba for the next few days.

The track forcasts suggest that Noel will swing towards the Bahamas after it crosses Cuba.

Also please spare a thought for the recipients of this rainfall ... this is gearing up to be a major event and there are likely to be some significant flood events and possible (likely) loss of life.

Hopefully this will be the last event of the 2007 Hurricane season.

NOEL <KNOLL> UPDATE

The Storn centre has just passed across Haiti and is now over warms seas which will bring a little strengthening over the next couple of days.



Landfall has segmented Noel somewhat but as I said in the last post, this is pretty academic with very heavy rains falling over the Dominican and Haiti ... considerable flooding and (according to some reports, loss of life) will be a consequence of this.

Noel will now move across the Bahamas, but the rains on the eastern side of this storn will continue to affect the Dominican and Haiti and Cuba for a while.

Meanwhile, back on the farm so to speak, the next Tropical Wave is now moving across Tobago with plenty of rain for the next 24 hours.

It's not all bad news ... there is plenty of drier air behind this Wave so the hard-core sun lovers can start applying the vegtable oils again from Wednesday !!
