We spent two weeks in Saffron studio apartment in March 2013 and had an excellent time. If you are looking for luxury accommodation then this is not the place for you, but if you are looking for basic self-catering accommodation in an authentic Tobagon setting then you will find it is ideal.

The balcony on Saffron is the best feature as it is extremely private and surrounded by lush vegetation. Numerous birds (and bats) visit the balcony each day if you put out food.

The apartment is in a great location. You feel safe as it is within the village and it is only a very short walk from the beach (although up a pretty steep hill). As it is within the village, you should expect some general noise including music from the Blue Mango pub/restaurant; however this didn't bother us, it just added to the general relaxed atmosphere.

Before we went, we were slightly concerned about the lack of air conditioning, wondering whether it would be too hot to sleep well. However, as described in the cottage details the open, airy construction of the building means that it does not get too hot, especially with a fan on.

The apartment also has a lockable safe which made us feel more comfortable about leaving valuables and passports etc. We were also provided with a mobile phone for the duration of our visit which was really helpful for contacting the manager and arranging trips etc. The manager and maid were very attentive without being intrusive.

The self catering facilities are adequate, but not perfect so you may have to improvise a bit. There is no grill and although there is an oven, no baking tray/roasting tin was provided.

Overall we thought it was a great base, and Castara is wonderful. Beautiful and welcoming to tourists. We travelled throughout the island during our visit and felt that Castara was without a doubt, the best place to stay.
