Rosa's House. We visited in late Jan 2006, and didn't really know what to expect. The place looks gorgeous, a really attractive house, beautifully painted. We had the Top Floor apartment, and at the time, no-one was in the ground floor place.

Now, we loved Rosa's House, hence the four stars, but it won't be everyone's cup of tea. It was big and basic- very basic. It was clean enough for us, but my mother may not have approved. You have what you need: but bring accessories like matches to light the stove, and washing up liquid. The house is airy, the bed is comfy and has a mosquito net, there is a big shower. The thing is- you don't actually end up spending much time in the house- because the thing that really blows you away about Rosa's House is the location.

It really must have the best spot in Charlottesville: just on the incline on the way to Pirate's Bay; the house is about 15m from the sea (if you don't like the sounds of the waves on the shore, stop reading now!), with fabulous views over Man O War Bay; and a huge balcony with comfy chairs to sit and enjoy watching the pelicans and frigate birds (or bats and glow flies at night). I was up at 6.30am every morning just to sit there and watch the world go by. It also avoids the worse excesses of the village cockerels!

Gifford, who runs Rosa's house and the nearby Belle Aire Inn, is a really helpful, friendly and relaxed guy who was always accessible when we needed advice or help, but left us to our own devices all other times. There is a car parking space for one car on the edge of the unmade road by the gate to the house. Very useful for snorkellers and divers, there is a big sink on the wall which you can use to wash your gear down (you can also do laundry here and use the nearby washing line).

So; a spacious, practical place, fabulously situated, which makes everyone trudging up to Pirate's Bay green with envy when they see you skipping down the paths.
