My family and I have stayed in the Little House on the Hill in Castara five times now and there are numerous reasons we keep coming back. First of all, the hosts Marguarite and Sherwin Clarke are delightful, knowledgeable people and have become dear friends of ours over the years. They know how to make a visit to Tobago magical!
Second, the cottages sit up the mountain from the lovely Castara beaches and the more recent hustle and bustle of town. The two secluded units are surrounded by lush tropical gardens carefully tended by Sherwin. Depending upon the season, you may pick a mango, nectarine or banana for a snack.
Perched on their own hill, the cottages have verandas that overlook local life and the gardens. Here you enjoy a peaceful view of the surrounding hillsides, rainbows, sunsets, and starry night skies. And this is the place for armchair birding! Motmots, bananaquits, hummingbirds, and blue-gray tanagers regularly visit as they feed upon the flowers and fruit. A rind of papaya, crust of bread, and sugar from your breakfast tea placed on the railing can bring unimaginable visitors! In the distance, frigatebirds soar and flocks of parrots swirl.
The clean affordable cottages are simply furnished and equipped but we find most everything we need when we visit. They are a welcome retreat from our busy and gadgety lives stateside! The immediate grounds are flat and removed from the road. They were ideal for our children to safely run around and explore when they were young. It’s a fifteen minute walk up and down hill to Little Beach or you can rent a car from your hosts to wander farther.
An extra bonus is that Marguarite and Sherwin run a local restaurant in town. You can call in then pick up delicious dinners and dine under the stars on the verandas.

Thank you for wonderful times and memories, Marguarite and Sherwin,
Nathalie, Ben, Cali and Kyle
