We first stayed in October 2006 for two weeks, and enjoyed Castara and Little House on the Hill so much that we did exactly the same this year. In the meantime the smaller cottage was built and as far as we are concerned has had zero impact. Not quite true as the building entailed the cutting down of a golden apple tree which provided much fruit the previous year.
We are a family of four with two boys, 10 and 12 years old. They are still of an age to share the second double bed. The things we enjoyed particularly about the cottage were:
1)the hammock for lounging with book and drink
2)the balcony at the front, perfect for sitting out in the evening and first thing in the morning
3)the side area with outside table and benches perfect for breakfast
4)Maggi and Sherwin, very amiable and helpful hosts. Sherwin runs 2 boats and we had a fantastic trip fishing with dolphin fish and kingfish being caught.
5)the quantity and variety of wild life about the cottage and garden, mainly birds and lizards
6)the garden with all its fruit - mangoes, limes, bannanas, papya, lemons, and avacado
7)the big fridgefreezer for non stop supply of ice and cold drinks
8)location means it catches the breezes and makes it seem cooler and perhaps explains lack of biting insects, I think this is big plus compared to some of apartments in Castara
9)location - not in center of Castara and yet not too far from
10) provision of barbecue
I cannot think of many downsides - the steep access, would not be not ideal for everyone, sometimes there can be a lot of early heavy traffic with associated road noise, some neigbours at times played loud music, which again may not suit everyone.
