Just an update on the upstairs apartment: it has NO WINDOWS!!!
There are a/c units in the three bedrooms, but windows and roofs are open. Makes a great fresh breeze during the day but also guarantees sleepless nights.
It was filthy when we came, but the very friendly and helpful landlady mopped and did some walls, we did stove and kitchen and fixed cupboards and shower and bathrooms, however we could not get the smell out of the sheets. The apartment is pretty and could be a great place to stay with windows and more cleaning.
