Firstly, we are a couple in our early fifties, we travelled without our teenagers (the only way!). If you want to visit the Caribbean but are put off by heavy commercialisation and worries about personal safety then Tobago is for you – we met Trinidadians, Brits, Germans and Jamaicans who have come here to live because of the laid back and safe lifestyle.
If don’t want an all-inclusive, ‘could be anywhere’ holiday but hope for somewhere individual, quiet and beautiful then Gloucester Place is the pick of the bunch. This is a fantastic place to stay, the house is comfortable, the rooms are well appointed, there is a lovely pool, a waterfall on the grounds, a bar within a 5 minute amble and the stunning Parlatuvier Bay a 10 minute walk away. The wonderful Englishmans Bay is a few minutes drive and Castara is about ten minutes or so.
Bea & Win are such a friendly, helpful and interesting couple who will leave you to do your own thing or include you in their daily lives, whichever you prefer. The food was great; eight breakfasts, none of which were the same and all of which were delicious (and huge). We also had a couple of evening meals which were lovely, one of which started with a trip down to the jetty to select a fish from the catch just brought in.
Bea and Win were very helpful, full of suggestions for places to visit, places to avoid, restaurant tips etc, going so far as to give us a lift a couple of times. They were also generous enough to let us use the internet and I even watched the Utd-City derby (Win follows the Premier League – well after a fashion, he’s an Arsenal supporter!). They both have a great stock of stories from their time teaching around the world and you can sit on the balcony with a few beers or rums just shooting the breeze; read a book by the pool or go and visit one of the beaches.
All in all the most relaxing holiday we have ever been on.
