Only the south west of Tobago is developed for tourism. The rest of the island has lots of small attractive villages and lovely sandy beaches, edged by forests, that are almost deserted, and the mountainous rainforest in the middle. The location of the Coco Reef is convenient and the view from the restaurant over the gardens, narrow beach, man-made lagoon and the yachts beyond is beautiful. Breakfast was good and it was great to relax in the sun and look at the view. Dinner in the main restaurant was variable as was the service. The bedrooms let it down. We were upgraded to a suite with 2 huge rooms and a kitchenette. This had a fridge, microwave and (poor quality) units with a breakfast bar but no plates or dishes. It was useful for washing swimming and snorkelling gear. The bathroom was small and poorly appointed with one small towel rail that would not take all the towels let alone any washing. The air conditioning functioned adequately, just, although in one room it was obviously very old. We had 2 balconies with the original metal sliding doors that were difficult to open and close; the view was of a small courtyard full of palm trees with the noisy air conditioning units of the spa on one side. The towels, bed, pillows and linen were of poor quality. Storage space was good but in order to see into the safe I had to stand on a chair. Overall, the rooms were shabby and dated. The Coco Reef may be best resort hotel on the island but it is a long way from the best in the Caribbean. Nonetheless, it was pleasant and good value for money for this region.
